Nam Dinh Pho becomes national intangible cultural heritage

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has officially listed "Pho Nam Dinh" and "Quang noodles" as national intangible cultural heritage.

Accordingly, “Pho Nam Dinh” was included by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in the List of National Intangible Cultural Heritage in the form of folk knowledge, meeting all the following criteria: representative, expressing community and local identity; reflecting cultural diversity and human creativity, inherited through many generations; capable of recovery and long-term existence; agreed upon by the community, voluntarily nominated and committed to protection.

Nam Dinh is the homeland of pho. Pho is a popular dish in Vietnamese culinary culture, loved by many people not only domestically but also in many countries around the world. Over time, pho has become the pride of Nam Dinh land and people; affirming the value of the culinary brand with unique features expressed in all stages: from preparation, selection of ingredients, food; method of making typical pho noodles; processing and finishing a delicious bowl of pho to ensure flavor, nutritional quality...

The recognition of “Pho Nam Dinh” as a national intangible cultural heritage is the initial basis for the Government to submit to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for consideration and inclusion of “Pho Nam Dinh” in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. From there, propose solutions to preserve and promote the value of the intangible cultural heritage “Pho Nam Dinh”; continue to promote propaganda and promotion activities for the culinary cultural heritage “Pho Nam Dinh”; strengthen State management of the heritage; at the same time, enhance the role and responsibility of authorities at all levels, culinary associations and organizations and the community in preserving and protecting the brand value and unique culinary products of Nam Dinh land and people.

On this occasion, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung also signed a decision to include the folk knowledge of My Quang of Quang Nam province in the List of national intangible cultural heritage.

Previously, on August 10, 2023, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province sent a document to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism requesting to include the Quang noodle processing profession in Quang Nam province in the list of national intangible cultural heritage.

According to the People's Committee of Quang Nam province, the craft of making Quang noodles in this province converges the unique culinary values ​​of Quang. Quang noodles follow the footsteps of migrants on their journey to the open South, willing to accept any ingredients on the way to absorb, adapt, and create diversity and richness in culinary flavors. This is a dish with many variations, highlighting the characteristics of folk culinary culture; a rare dish that can "please" all types of guests; a rustic dish but contains the historical formation process and folk knowledge system of Quang Nam land.

Previously, the website known as the "world culinary map" Taste Atlas also released a list of 100 best Vietnamese dishes for international diners to experience, including Quang noodles.
