Hello!
Iron deficiency anemia reduces the number or size of red blood cells, leading to a decrease in the ability to transport oxygen to the body's organs. This causes symptoms such as fatigue, drowsiness, loss of energy, negative thinking, decreased ability to concentrate, rapid heartbeat during exertion, pale skin, and pale fingernails. Early stages of iron deficiency anemia are often difficult to detect because the symptoms are easily overlooked.
There are many causes of anemia and iron deficiency, mainly due to a diet lacking in iron, lacking variety, or being too restrictive. Vegetarians are at risk of iron and vitamin B12 deficiency. In addition, some foods reduce iron absorption, such as coffee.
You can improve this condition through dietary supplements such as:
- Foods rich in iron: Animal liver is the richest source of iron, in addition to beef, chicken, pork, and fish.
- Eat a variety of food groups: Make sure to include all 4 groups (starch, protein, vegetables, fruits) in your daily meals.
- Fresh vegetables and fruits: Provide vitamins and minerals that support iron absorption, especially vitamin C. Prioritize vegetables rich in iron such as kale and lettuce.
- Limit foods that inhibit iron absorption: Coffee and tea (especially milk tea and energy drinks) should be consumed far from iron-supplemented meals. Milk should also be consumed about 1.5 - 2 hours after main meals.
Note, if you have been diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia through testing and have clinical symptoms. Treatment with iron tablets must follow a doctor's regimen, usually lasting 3-6 months.
In summary, having a varied, balanced diet with adequate iron can prevent and support the treatment of iron deficiency anemia. When iron deficiency anemia occurs, iron supplementation with medication must follow the doctor's instructions and be combined with a scientific diet.
