Can Vietnamese and Vietnamese-origin films win the hearts of Vietnamese viewers?

Usually, each year VFC releases 1-2 films with foreign scripts. The most recent films with Korean scripts are Taste of Love and Love on Sunny Days.

Both films also partly attracted the attention of the audience.

In early 2024, K+ produced the movie Towards Fire inspired by the famous Taiwanese TV series Tears of the Fire God .

On the VieON system, most of the films broadcast are foreign scripts such as Mother's Dream, Winter Sun, Flower King, Love Before Wedding.

From 2024, stations will increase the broadcasting hours of new Vietnamese films, so the need for good scripts is even more urgent.

"To meet the requirements of fast production, the producer chose to use foreign scripts for Vietnamization because they thought they only needed to make minor revisions or copy the original script for production.

However, the process of turning a story with cultural, social, political, economic and human colors in another country into a story with Vietnamese colors still requires a lot of time and creative effort from the screenwriter, otherwise it will become a patchwork, forced and strange story," said screenwriter Hoang Anh.

Audience on board

After a long time of releasing a series of foreign scripted films such as Apple Blossom, Winter Sun, The Lady, Love Before the Wedding , VieON introduces to viewers the pure Vietnamese film Wish We Could Fly Together .

Broadcast to episode 26, this film attracts attention and creates sympathy with the audience.

Previously, the movie Love Before Wedding , with an original Thai script, received many criticisms because the story was not suitable for Vietnamese culture and the actors' acting was not convincing.

It is worth mentioning that the original version of Love Before Wedding created a buzz when it was broadcast in Vietnam.

According to many Vietnamese film producers, foreign scripted films have many emotional limitations.

The first thing is that the audience compares the content and actors of the film with the original version. Another disadvantage is that the audience does not watch the film in a curious state because they know the content in advance, reducing the excitement when watching the film.

Specifically, before the last 10 episodes of Love Before the Wedding were broadcast, many clips of the original Thai version of the film appeared on social networks. Even the film sites changed the original name of the film to Love Before the Wedding like the Vietnamese version.

Usually, audiences only spend a short time to know the content and fate of each character at the end of the film, so their excitement for Vietnamese films is greatly reduced.

Watching pure Vietnamese movies is like sitting in the same boat with the movie producers. Wherever they take you, you follow them, not knowing the content in advance, so the movie creates curiosity to watch the next episodes.

The worries

That's the theory, but when watching pure Vietnamese movies today, audiences don't want to get on board because attractive movies are rare.

The films still follow the old motifs of family, karma, evil begets evil, family civil war, revenge - deep love. For example, the film On the Shore of Happiness on THVL1 exploits the secrets and struggles for inheritance in the Ngo family.

On SCTV14, the film "Secret of the Heir" is also an inheritance story with hidden secrets passed down from generation to generation.

Analyzing the reason, screenwriter Dang Thanh said that the producer always wants to reduce costs as much as possible, plus the family theme is safe, so there will be viewers from many generations.

Director Bui Tien Huy said that in 2014, during a collaboration with CJ (Korea), when hearing about the budget for producing a TV series in Vietnam (about several hundred million VND), the Korean side was "shocked" because they did not understand why such a small budget could produce a film.

In Korea, the average budget to produce a TV drama episode is around $500,000. When Netflix jumped in, that number jumped to around $800,000 to $1 million per episode.

On the other hand, whether it's a short film or a series, in Korea there is teamwork (including 5-7 screenwriters).

When building a long-term plot, the script will be relatively solid and not get bogged down at the end.

"In our country, the number of screenwriters writing for a film is very small, 2-3 people is a lot. Creativity is also limited due to time pressure. Therefore, the common situation is that when writing a film script that is too long, the end of the film is often stuck and confusing," director Bui Tien Huy shared.

Screenwriter and director Hoang Anh said: "The script is an extremely important factor in the success or failure of each film, but in Vietnam, especially in the field of television and now cinema, the script has been "infected" and disregarded."

Hoang Anh suggested that it is necessary to re-plan the method of exploiting film content, creating large playgrounds for young screenwriters to be able to find new trends that are more suitable to the audience's tastes.

Not a trend

The number of films with original Vietnamese scripts has been overwhelming Vietnamized scripts recently. Director Bui Tien Huy said that "that is not a trend", because according to him: "This time, we have not seen any foreign film scripts suitable for the Vietnamese audience, so the number is much smaller.

However, there will be a few Vietnamese adaptations airing soon." At Southern film studios, some films with foreign scripts are also being produced, such as Stolen Happiness, 7 Years of No Marriage Will Break Up...
