Vietnamese films invest in technology to integrate into the global market.

The application of technology to Vietnamese films helps improve their technical quality, thereby enabling them to participate in the global market.

The horror film "Possessed by a Demon," directed by Pom Nguyen and produced by Nhat Trung, released on March 7th, has grossed over 149 billion VND (according to Box Office Vietnam) in the Vietnamese market. Although the film received mixed reviews regarding its content, it is one of the rare Vietnamese films released in 4DX format with Dolby Atmos sound.

Complete and immersive

Among these, 4DX is a film format enhanced with weather effects (rain, wind, lightning, fog) and realistic shaking movements thanks to multi-directional seats. Launched commercially in 2009, 4DX supports both 2D and 3D formats. In Vietnam, this technology is available at some CGV cinemas in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi . Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that creates a multi-dimensional sound effect by increasing the width, depth, and height of the soundstage.

According to producer Nhat Trung, the film has been licensed for screening in a total of 23 countries and territories, including many with high technical standards such as the United States, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan (China), New Zealand, and Canada. "The Corpse" premiered concurrently with Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan (China) on March 7th. It was shown in South Korea from March 19th and in the United States from March 28th. Kim Young-min, the producer of "Exhuma," previously expressed satisfaction with the film's quality, especially its technical aspects.

The previous success of the film "Ghost" gave Vietnamese film producers the opportunity to sit down with many partners, opening up technical and technological requirements in addition to the story and script. "We made many changes when making 'Possessed by a Ghost,' such as shooting with 8K cameras, providing high resolution and sharp images. Regarding sound, we also approached Dolby Atmos as requested by many international partners," shared producer Nhat Trung.

Before "Possessed by a Demon," director Thu Trang's film "The Billion Dollar Kiss," released during the Lunar New Year, was also the first Vietnamese film to be screened in IMAX format. This is the most advanced film projection technology in the world today, from the impressive theater design to the high-quality sound and visual effects. Audiences will be able to fully immerse themselves in the world of the film.

Audiences enhance their experience.

Investing in technologies and improving image and sound quality is not only to meet the requirements of international partners but also to enhance the audience experience.

Director Thu Trang affirmed that she had invested perfectly in terms of visuals and sound during the production of "The Billion Dollar Kiss," thereby creating impressive experiences for the audience. Producer Nhat Trung added, "Updating and investing in new technologies in filmmaking is necessary to enhance the audience experience. This will be a trend in the near future of Vietnamese cinema."

Besides investing in improving image and sound quality, Vietnamese films are increasingly embracing special effects, virtual studios, and other technologies. Among these, computer-generated imagery (CGI) has become prevalent in the Vietnamese film market across many genres, especially horror, supernatural, and fantasy films. Films that heavily invest in this technology include "Claws" and "The Sun Man"...

In the film "Claws," the filmmakers invested heavily in the image of the giant bear named Mật, with a CGI budget of up to 30%. Meanwhile, Vietnamese films such as "Face Off 6: The Ticket of Destiny," "Face Off 7: One Wish," and "The Sun Man"... have utilized virtual production technology.

This technology is still relatively new to Vietnamese cinema. Virtual studios are a blend of traditional filmmaking with real-time CGI image simulation and digital technology, creating an interactive and engaging environment for visual storytelling.

Investing in the right and sufficient technology helps filmmakers save time and costs, and meet the requirements of international partners. Of course, investing in technology is only one part of the journey in creating a film, contributing to its box office success.

According to experts, films that invest in audio-visual technology will enhance audience enjoyment. When Vietnamese films are screened in foreign markets, where audiences are accustomed to high-quality filming and sound, they will not suffer from technical shortcomings.

"I think in the future, Vietnamese filmmakers need to focus on investing in technology because the Vietnamese audience's level of sophistication is increasing. To win over Vietnamese audiences and expand the reach of Vietnamese films internationally, this investment is essential," screenwriter Dong Hoa observed.
