Tran Thanh's movie 'Mai' reached a total revenue of 22 million USD

According to Deadline , Tran Thanh's Mai became the first Vietnamese film to gross $1 million when it premiered overseas. The film earned $917,000 from 154 theaters in North America and $133,000 from 40 theaters in the UK, France, Germany, Norway, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. Bringing the film's total global revenue to more than $22 million.

Launched internationally on March 22, the film was shown in nearly 200 theaters in 9 countries and territories such as the US, Canada, UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia...

This is also an impressive milestone, marking the biggest opening weekend for a Vietnamese film in North America and Europe. In addition, Mai is also the first film to be shown on the same day in two continents.

In Vietnam, Mai is the highest-grossing movie of all time. After 41 days of release since February 10 (the first day of Lunar New Year), Mai reached 520 billion VND with 6.5 million tickets sold. With 3 movies achieving "huge" revenue, Tran Thanh became the first trillion-dollar director in Vietnam.

The film revolves around the life of the female lead named Mai (Phuong Anh Dao), a nearly 40-year-old masseuse who accidentally meets musician Duong (Tuan Tran) and is pursued by him. Lacking self-confidence, Mai does not have the courage to accept the feelings of a guy 7 years her junior.

Compared to the two films "Nha Ba Nu" and "Bo Gia", Tran Thanh's "Mai" received the least mixed reviews. Tran Thanh showed a clear improvement, from the camera angle, the way the scenes were changed to the way the story was told. The film no longer had too many scenes of arguing and "market" dialogue between the characters.

Mai is considered Tran Thanh's best movie ever.
