Continuously breaking the 100 billion VND mark

In 2014, Let's Go 2 directed by Charlie Nguyen earned more than 101 billion VND, becoming the first Vietnamese film to reach the 100 billion VND mark when released in theaters. In the following years, a number of films surpassed this mark, although not many, such as Em la ba noi cua anh (102 billion VND - 2015), Em chua 18 (171 billion VND - 2017), Sieu sao sieu ngo (109 billion VND - 2018), Lat mat 4: Nha co khach (118 billion VND - 2019), Hai Phuong (130 billion VND - 2019), Mat biec (180 billion VND - 2019)...

In 2024, there will be 6 films earning more than 100 billion VND: Mai (551 billion VND), Lat mat 7: Mot giau (483 billion VND), Get rich with ghosts (128 billion VND), Ma da (127 billion VND), Cam (117 billion VND), Chi dau (113 billion VND). However, the number of films with very low revenue and heavy losses is also quite large, such as Hot girl squad (68 million VND), Fragile flower (430 million VND), Domino: The last escape (596.7 million VND), Tra (1.6 billion VND), Murder on the 4th floor (1.99 billion VND), Bright lights (3.4 billion VND), B4S - Before love (3.8 billion VND), Claws (3.88 billion VND), The most beautiful summer (4.1 billion VND), Kaleidoscope (6 billion VND), The heiress 2 (6.4 billion VND)...

Since the beginning of 2025, the situation has been more positive. The market has not had any works that failed in terms of revenue, while a series of films released in theaters have been big winners such as The Four Guardians (VND 332 billion), The Ancestors' House (VND 225 billion), Billion Dollar Kiss (VND 211 billion), and Ghost Lights (VND 105 billion).

Peak revenue in 2025?

According to film critic Le Hong Lam, the Vietnamese film season since the beginning of the year has only achieved average quality. However, he also believes that the market has become more diverse because there are "promising new filmmakers appearing, sitting in the director's chair for the first time such as Hoang Nam ( Den am hon ), Thu Trang ( Nu hon bac bien). Although there are still some limitations, a few web drama segments that cannot be removed, Nha gia tien written and directed by Huynh Lap is completely an entertaining film that suits the taste of the majority of audiences thanks to its charming storytelling ability. Family and traditional values are the two things that this film focuses on building and although there are some broken places, it still more or less touches the audience's emotions, spreading strongly to attract more people to watch", Le Hong Lam assessed.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hai, Content Director of CJ CGV VN, commented: "The revenue of the series of films from the beginning of the year until now has surprised the distributor. In my opinion, that success is due to the following reasons: Vietnamese films are increasingly invested in, both in terms of cost and creativity, suitable for the tastes of young audiences so they are actively spread, plus the market does not have many big foreign films to compete, so Vietnamese films occupy more market share. The important thing is that Vietnamese people often like to watch Vietnamese films, so when there are suitable films, the audience will support them."

Meanwhile, producer Nguyen Cao Tung (who produced the films Dark Souls , I See Yellow Flowers on the Green Grass , The Girl from Yesterday , Bloody Heart , Super Silly Super Star... ) opined: "The Vietnamese film market is entering a "window" period when Hollywood films are losing their appeal, Korean films are also showing signs of slowing down, and online entertainment channels that charge fees lack good Vietnamese films. Therefore, Vietnamese films are able to achieve high revenue more easily than in previous times. A film that is carefully produced, of quality, and has something for the audience to watch, is likely to reach 100 billion VND within reach. This is most clearly demonstrated through the case of Nha Gia Tien . The audience spent nearly 700 billion VND for the Tet movie season but was still willing to spend more than 200 billion VND to buy tickets to Nha Gia Tien .

In my opinion, Hollywood's revenue bottomed out in 2025 and then began to recover in 2026, so Vietnamese films may peak in 2025. And if domestic films continue to maintain good quality, and are still loved by audiences, then it is entirely possible that in 2025 they will account for nearly 40% of the market share with a revenue of VND2,000 billion out of the total revenue of the film market of about VND4,800 billion.

Ghost in the House is a horror film, inspired by a true story about a man who "slept with his wife's corpse" for many years. The film was directed by Pom Nguyen, with the participation of Kha Nhu, Quang Tuan, Van Dung, People's Artist Thanh Nam, Meritorious Artist Phu Don, Trung Ruoi, Thanh Tan... Ghost in the House officially premiered on March 7 and achieved a revenue of more than 76 billion VND as of the morning of March 12 (according to data from independent box office monitoring unit Box Office Vietnam).
