On the evening of April 7, the film reached a new revenue milestone, including early screenings. According to Box Office Vietnam - an independent box office monitoring unit, last weekend (April 4-6), the film attracted nearly 500,000 viewers. The achievement of Tunnels far surpassed other films released on the same occasion, such as Minecraft (13 billion VND) - a blockbuster adapted from the classic game, and The Secret Service - an action film starring Jason Statham (over 9 billion VND).
With the current ticket sales rate, The Tunnels is expected to soon surpass the 100 billion VND mark. According to a Box Office representative, the film will continue to attract attention in the coming time due to few competitors. The upcoming films are mainly foreign projects, while Lat Mat 8 and Detective Kien - two Vietnamese films that have received much attention - are scheduled to be released at the end of April.
Bui Thac Chuyen said he was happy with the audience's support. Initially, he was afraid that the rather long duration (128 minutes) might affect the viewer's experience. The first cut of the film was about 3.5 hours, the director had to cut many character lines, including Thai Hoa's favorite scenes.
The director's concern also lies in the scene reconstruction. According to him, the tunnel consists of three tunnels with separate functions such as a meeting room, a kitchen, and a bedroom. "On screen, viewers may have difficulty distinguishing which tunnel is which, even though I asked the artist to design each tunnel with its own materials. Therefore, I have to find a way to lead the way," he said. The production unit plans to release the film abroad after its domestic run ends.
The plot revolves around a group of 21 guerrillas who stayed in Cu Chi after the US raid on Cedar Falls (1967). Captain Bay Theo (played by actor Thai Hoa) and his teammates were assigned to protect the area for the strategic intelligence group. However, their communications were discovered by the enemy. The guerrillas fell into a dangerous situation, facing many raids. The project commemorates the 50th anniversary of the country's reunification, and is a war film made from socialized budget.
