The two countries' senior leaders regularly maintain visits and contacts at international and regional forums. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and Prime Minister Kishida Fumio have had 5 meetings to promote the relationship between the two countries.

Japan is Vietnam's leading economic partner, the largest ODA donor, the second largest labor partner, the third largest investor, the third largest tourism partner, and the fourth largest trade partner. The two countries also share similar positions and coordinate closely and effectively in multilateral forums.
