On January 20, Mr. Trump announced that the US would withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), saying that the agency had mishandled global health crises.
New US President Donald Trump said that the WHO has been affected by "improper political influence from member states", as well as demanding that the US pay "unfair and burdensome" contributions, far exceeding the contributions of other major countries such as China, according to Reuters news agency.
“WHO took advantage of us, everyone took advantage of America. That will not happen again,” Mr. Trump said while signing the executive order withdrawing the US from WHO on January 20.
WHO has not yet responded to the incident.
Health experts say the move will weaken the US's position as a global health leader and make it more difficult to respond to future pandemics.
However, this is not a surprise. Mr. Trump has continuously criticized WHO since 2020 during his first term over its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while threatening to cut off funding, according to the New York Times .
But he lost to former President Biden in the 2020 election, so the threat was postponed until four years later.
Following Mr Trump’s announcement, the US will withdraw from the WHO within 12 months and stop all financial contributions to the agency. Under US law, a withdrawal from the WHO must be given a year in advance and the US must pay all outstanding dues.
Lawrence O. Gostin, a public health law expert at Georgetown University, said the US withdrawal from the WHO is “a serious wound” to the public health system, but “an even deeper wound to US national interests and security.”
