According to Reuters news agency on March 29, a Thai woman gave birth while the hospital was being evacuated due to the impact of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Myanmar on March 28.
The pregnant woman, 36-year-old Kanthong Saenmuangshin, went to the Police General Hospital in Bangkok for a routine pregnancy check-up that day. However, just as the ground began to shake, she suddenly went into labor.
When the earthquake occurred, all hospital staff immediately evacuated patients to the ground floor and out of the building to ensure safety.
While being escorted down five flights of stairs, Ms. Kanthong’s water suddenly broke. The labor pains came on and she panicked, fearing that she might give birth right there on the stairs.
“I told my child, don't go out right now,” Ms. Kanthong recalled with a smile mixed with nervousness.
As soon as she was brought back to the hospital, the medical staff quickly placed her on the bed and did their best to support her. Amidst the chaos, surrounded by doctors and nurses racing against time, she successfully gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
“For me, it was a real shock,” she confided, recalling the moment of giving birth amid the earthquake.
Her husband was at work at the time and could not be there in time to witness the important moment. However, when she saw her daughter being born safely, Mrs. Kanthong felt relieved and burst into happiness.
The baby girl was born just as the earthquake was ending, making her joy multiply.
The couple decided to nickname their child “Mink.” Despite the special circumstances of his birth, they insisted that they would not choose any name related to that terrible earthquake.
The story of baby Mink's birth in the middle of an earthquake quickly attracted media attention, becoming a warm bright spot amid the devastating natural disaster.
