(Dan Tri) - Nguyen Thi Huong became the first female engineer to graduate with honors in aeronautical engineering at the Vietnam Aviation Academy in more than 40 years thanks to her ability to overcome prejudices.

Behind this miracle is not only the effort, the learning results, the scores but above all the journey to overcome gender prejudice in the girl Nguyen Thi Huong herself. The view that professions in science, engineering, technology, especially in the field of aviation engineering are "men's territory" has long been popular. When mentioning these jobs, people will immediately think of the image of male engineers. However, this cannot prevent many girls from overcoming those invisible barriers to pursue and affirm their own abilities. And the girl Nguyen Thi Huong is one of such cases. Huong honestly shared that at first, engineering was not her choice because since childhood, she was... fascinated that when she grew up, she would become a policewoman specializing in catching bad guys. Then the fate of becoming a police officer did not come when Huong did not have enough points to enter this field. At that time, Huong had many choices, but she... unexpectedly changed course when pursuing a career that was considered "for boys": aviation engineering. Huong could only explain why the career chose her. She tried her best to overcome invisible barriers and prejudices to pursue the career.

Everyone understands that female students studying in the engineering field will have to try many times harder. Literally speaking, this place is not easy, leisurely, clean, but can be heavy lifting, climbing to repair, install equipment, dirty... In fact, many female students actively pursue engineering but then give up halfway when they cannot "live with the crowd". As for Huong, after the theory hours, she began to be fascinated by the practical hours of carrying, tinkering, exploring with machinery, with grease... When studying, Huong loved being able to directly hold the tools to practice on engines more than studying in books. Huong can work enthusiastically in the sun, disassemble and assemble engines, repair machines or even carry heavy objects. Gradually, the girl realized that this was her passion, her desire. In addition to preparing herself for a healthy life to face this "physically corrosive" job, Huong has the advantage of being skillful and meticulous to complete the work as neatly as possible. In addition, Huong revealed: "As a female student, I am favored, helped and supported enthusiastically by teachers and male classmates. I am not afraid to ask questions, so I have gathered a lot of knowledge from teachers and friends." During her studies, Huong and her teachers and friends carried out many projects. In particular, the topic "Application of virtual reality in maintenance" helps users to use virtual reality glasses with pre-installed maintenance programs to practice the maintenance procedures of an airline. Huong also participated in a research group on the process of assessing safety and quality in airline maintenance at school. In addition, Huong and some lecturers are still developing a project on aircraft maintenance technology, supporting the learning process of students majoring in aviation engineering. After graduation, Huong continues to pursue her studies and research in her specialized field.

Women pursuing engineering need to overcome prejudice against themselves (Photo: NVCC).

Talking about women pursuing engineering, female engineer Nguyen Thi Huong shared that it doesn't matter whether you are male or female, the most important thing is that you have passion, love and study and work with purpose. For girls pursuing engineering, according to Huong, they need to prepare themselves with a strong mentality as well as good health to be able to follow the learning and research process and determine that they will have to put in more effort than men. That is the way to overcome the prejudice that "women can't do it".
