For generations, for ethnic minorities in Gia Lai, village elders, village chiefs, and prestigious people... have usually been men, but now, many women hold these positions. Female village elders have made many contributions to the community, helping to build increasingly prosperous villages. Among them are two female village elders and prestigious people in the border area of Ia Mo, Chu Prong district.

"Fulcrum" of Goong villagers
The spacious and well-furnished house of old Siu H'Phyin (born in 1950), Goong village, Ia Mo commune, is considered a "red address" where the village children often gather to listen to him tell stories about the fierce days of the war against American imperialism. Among the stories he tells, there is a story about herself - a quick-witted and cheerful guerrilla. At the age of eighteen or twenty, the girl H'Phyin participated in carrying rice, collecting firewood, cooking rice to serve the soldiers and in the historic Plei Me campaign, she joined the youth and villagers in carrying the wounded and supplying ammunition to the fierce battlefield.
After the war, the village was in dire need of everything. H'Phyin took on the position of President of the Women's Union to mobilize people to actively work in production, not to cultivate and migrate, not to destroy forests for slash-and-burn cultivation; to mobilize families to send their children to school. At the same time, she actively participated with the Border Guard in patrolling and protecting the border. In 2015, village elder Siu H'Phyin was trusted by the villagers of Goong and voted as a Prestigious Person of the Village.

Chu Prong district currently has 95 prestigious people among ethnic minorities. The team of prestigious people in the villages always set a good example, steadfastly follow the Party, make efforts with the Party committee and local authorities to actively propagate and mobilize people to join hands to firmly protect border security...".
Mr. Siu Hieu, Deputy Head of Ethnic Affairs Department of Chu Prong district
Goong village has 100% ethnic minority population, life is still difficult. Besides, family discord, conflicts in the community still occur. To resolve conflicts, elder H'Phyin uses customs, village rules, conventions and legal regulations to mobilize, persuade and reconcile, since then many families have become harmonious and peaceful.
Ms. Ro Mah Ble from Goong village, Ia Puch commune, Chu Prong district said: “There were times when the family quarreled. When the village elder heard about it, he came to the house to give advice and reconcile. From then on, I understood my mistakes, tried to work hard, taught my children in the family, and together built a better life.”
Up to now, old man H'Phyin has gone through 75 farming seasons. The badges marking 30, 40, 45, 50 years of Party membership are always cherished by him. For old man H'Phyin, that is pride and motivation for him to continue to contribute, set an example, and lead the way for the younger generation.

"Bridge" between the Party, the Government and the People
Like a tireless bird, despite being nearly 80 years old, the village elder, the prestigious person Ksor H'Blam, Krong village, Ia Mo commune still wades through streams, crosses forests, together with the Party committee, local authorities and officers and soldiers of the Chu Prong District Military Command, Ia Mo Border Guard Station (Gia Lai Provincial Border Guard) actively propagates and mobilizes people to join hands in building a cultural life in residential areas; protecting border lines and landmarks; encouraging young people to enthusiastically go to perform military service...

Ms. H'Blâm said: “I still remember, in 2001, when I heard that two people from other places were illegally preaching in the village, I asked the villagers to hold them back and secretly reported to the Border Guard and the Commune Police. The two people were arrested shortly after. Through reading newspapers and listening to the radio, I learned that many ethnic minorities in the province were tricked into going abroad to work and then had to pay ransom. I, along with the Border Guard officers, focused on propaganda so that people would understand and take precautions.”
To gain people's trust and follow, Ms. H'Blam always sets an example by taking the lead in all public work, willing to help mentally and materially when people are in difficulty and guide people in economic development.
Lieutenant Colonel Le Dinh Su, Deputy Political Commissar of Ia Mo Border Guard Station, said: Village elder and prestigious person H'Blam has made great contributions to ensuring social security and order in the area where the unit is located. He is the link between the army and the people, and together with Ia Mo Border Guard Station, helps people escape poverty sustainably.
