Báo Dân ViệtBáo Dân Việt03/11/2024

Coffee prices reached over 100,000 VND/kg of beans, so Lam Dong people are very excited because of a year of good harvest and good prices. However, coffee growers are also worried about coffee theft.

Coffee growers are both happy and worried.

In just about a month, the 2024 coffee crop for people in Lam Dong will begin. At this time, many people's coffee gardens have begun to ripen, signaling a good harvest and good prices. The whole Lam Dong province currently has about 175,000 hectares, with an estimated output of more than 500,000 tons.

In Lam Ha district, which has one of the largest coffee growing areas in Lam Dong province, people are still taking care of the coffee trees to prepare for the harvest.

Currently, green coffee beans are being purchased at more than 100,000 VND/kg, so people are very excited because this is a new price that has only appeared in the last 2 years.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Hoang Van Dat (38 years old, residing in Phuc Tho commune, Lam Ha district, Lam Dong province) said that his family grows 10 hectares of coffee, and in 2024 the expected yield is 30 - 40 tons of coffee beans. Currently, he is still taking care of the trees to prepare for the harvest season as well as taking care of the branches for the harvest next year.

"Currently, the coffee price we are monitoring is from 100,000 to 110,000 VND/kg of beans. This is the second year that coffee prices have reached this high level, so we are very excited. Hopefully, coffee prices like this will be stable for a few years so that coffee growers can develop their economy.

Currently, many coffee gardens of Lam Dong people have begun to ripen, which makes garden owners worry about coffee theft.

However, the high price of coffee also makes us worry about theft. Therefore, these days, my family and the people around rarely go far, and every night we have to organize to look after and monitor our coffee garden," Mr. Dat shared.

Coffee growers in Lam Dong are both happy and worried when coffee prices reach over 100,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, Mr. Nguyen Minh Ngoc - Director of Tan Nghia Cooperative (Tan Nghia commune, Di Linh district, Lam Dong province) said that before the coffee harvest season, the risk of coffee theft is very high.

Mr. Ngoc said that in Di Linh district, many families with gardens far from home have to build camps in their coffee gardens to guard and prevent theft. Households with coffee gardens near each other also regularly discuss and agree to support the protection of their neighbors' coffee gardens.

Da Don Commune Police (Lam Ha District, Lam Dong Province) regularly visit and educate people to be vigilant and protect their coffee gardens during the season.

Mr. Vu Hong Long - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Di Linh district said that the whole district has about 46,000 hectares of coffee, with an expected output of 150,000 tons.

Although the harvest season has not yet begun, coffee theft is likely to occur due to high prices. Therefore, the district's agricultural sector has advised the district People's Committee to issue a document directing the police force and commune People's Committees to organize forces to patrol, control and protect crops.

Increase patrols and ensure security

Faced with the above situation, Di Linh district has requested relevant agencies to guide people in harvesting, preserving and caring for coffee trees after the 2024-2025 crop year. At the same time, localities must increase support to ensure security and safety for coffee gardens for people.

Specifically, the People's Committee of Di Linh district has assigned the district police to coordinate with functional units to strengthen inspection, supervision, and ensure security and safety for coffee gardens in the 2024-2025 crop year. At the same time, it will propagate to purchasing units and people to coordinate in self-management and crime reporting.

Di Linh district authorities requested communes in the area to propagate to people not to harvest green coffee berries, but only harvest berries at the right ripe stage.

At the same time, deploy measures and forces to grasp the situation and manage the number of freelance workers coming to work during the coffee harvest season.

Strengthen the inspection and patrolling of areas, traffic routes, and coffee gardens with few residents that are at risk of theft. In addition, check, improve the quality, and effectively use the security camera system to prevent crime and social evils in the district.

In addition, Di Linh district also requested communes in the area to propagate to people not to harvest green coffee berries, only harvest berries at the right ripe stage, not to harvest green or immature berries and to harvest properly. At the same time, harvest multiple times in one season to collect all ripe berries, and must stop harvesting 3-5 days before and after the flowers bloom.

Di Linh district is a locality with a large coffee area in Lam Dong.

In addition, for coffee purchasing and processing facilities in the area, Di Linh district also requires purchasing coffee that ensures the rate of ripe fruit (over 90% for wet processing method, over 80% for dry processing method), absolutely not purchasing green coffee fruit, high rate of impurities, pests. At the same time, propagate, guide, and supervise agents, fresh coffee purchasing points, request a commitment not to purchase green, immature coffee fruit and take measures to handle when detected.

As Dan Viet reported, on October 17, Mr. Nguyen Van Xuong (Ward 2, Bao Loc City (Lam Dong Province) was robbed by thieves. Specifically, all 11 of his family's fruit-bearing coffee trees were picked by thieves, leaving no fruit on the trees, and many branches were broken to the ground. Mr. Xuong estimated that about 400 kg of coffee had been stolen by thieves and taken out of the garden.

Mr. Xuong said that his family's coffee garden has been planted for about 10 years now and is well cared for, so it bears a lot of fruit. It is estimated that each tree can yield 35 - 40 kg of fresh fruit.

The theft before a season with high coffee prices like now has made him and people in the area very worried.
