With the desire to change the crop structure to increase income, Mr. A Pho, a billionaire farmer in Kon Tum in Kon Chenh village (Mang Canh commune, Kon Plong district) has become rich with a cold-climate vegetable growing model, bringing in hundreds of millions of dong in income per crop.
After many years of growing cassava on an area of 5 hectares with low efficiency, Mr. A Pho decided to change the crop structure to increase income and improve his family's life.
With a spirit of eagerness to learn, Mr. A Pho has proactively approached and learned about agricultural production models that bring high economic efficiency.
Mr. A Pho, a farmer in Mang Canh commune, Kon Plong district , boldly grows cold-climate vegetables, earning more than 300 million VND per crop. Growing 3 crops of vegetables per year, Mr. A Pho is a billionaire in Kon Tum.
Also at this time, Mr. Pho learned about the Mang Den Cold Vegetable Cooperative, which was supporting people with seedlings and materials to expand the clean agricultural production model and organic agriculture.
By mid-2024, Mr. A Pho boldly invested in land improvement, making beds, installing an automatic irrigation system and switching to growing cold-climate vegetables according to the organic model.
Thanks to the support from Mang Den Cold-Area Vegetable Cooperative, in the first crop season, Mr. A Pho boldly planted 3 hectares of Australian sweet potatoes and a small area of Japanese squash. After 4 months of diligent care, Mr. A Pho harvested more than 10 tons of vegetables and fruits, bringing in an income of nearly 400 million VND.
"The first time I approached and planted Australian sweet potatoes and Japanese squash, I encountered many difficulties because I had no experience in care. In the first crop, many Japanese squashes were damaged, and the Australian sweet potatoes did not yield much tubers, so the results were only average. Thanks to the professional industry guiding the technical care process and accumulating experience, I was able to plant the next crop with a higher yield than the previous one," Mr. A Pho confided.
The potato garden of Mr. A Pho, a billionaire farmer in Kon Tum in Mang Canh commune, Kon Plong district, is expected to yield 10 tons/ha.
After finishing the Australian sweet potato growing season, Mr. A Pho's family switched to growing 1 hectare of potatoes, 8,000 square meters of carrots and some taro.
These are crops that Kon Plong District Agricultural Service Center supported with seeds, materials, irrigation systems and technical care processes for pilot planting.
Currently, Mr. Pho's potato garden is being harvested, with an estimated yield of 10 tons/ha; carrots and taro will be harvested in April.
Mr. A Pho said that potatoes and carrots cost about 20,000 - 30,000 VND/kg... With this price, Mr. Pho expects to earn more than 300 million VND/crop.
According to Mr. Pho, if potatoes, taro, and carrots are well cared for and follow the correct technical process, they can be harvested after more than 3 months. As for Australian sweet potatoes, the time from planting to harvesting is more than 4 months, and if planted continuously from one crop to the next, the plants will grow poorly and yield low yields.
Therefore, after harvesting Australian sweet potatoes, his family improved the land to plant potatoes, taro, and carrots to avoid wasting land and bring stable income to the family.
Like that, Mr. A Pho's family grows about 3 crops a year, rotating between potatoes, taro, carrots, Australian sweet potatoes and many other vegetables.
"Growing Australian potatoes, taro, carrots and sweet potatoes requires little care and is highly profitable. Therefore, I will continue to maintain and expand this model on the remaining land in the coming seasons," said Mr. Pho.
Mr. A Pho's cold-climate vegetable growing model has opened up a new direction for local agriculture.
In addition to growing Australian sweet potatoes, potatoes, taro and carrots, Mr. Pho also grows wild vegetables, ginseng, cold-climate coffee, strawberries and ginger to diversify crops, bringing in stable income throughout the year.
Mr. Vo Lam Vu - Mang Den Cold Region Vegetable Cooperative said that the Australian sweet potato growing model supported by the cooperative in association with Mr. A Pho has initially achieved results.
According to Mr. Vu, this is the first step for people to understand how to do clean agriculture. From there, they will change their thinking and working methods to produce quality products, achieving more economic efficiency than traditional agricultural methods.
"My cooperative is working with local people to develop a clean agricultural production model. During the production process, the cooperative supports, guides techniques and guarantees product consumption. The Australian sweet potato growing model has been expanded by the cooperative to an area of more than 20 hectares in communes in the district, helping many households increase their income and improve their lives," said Mr. Vu.
Mr. A Xinh - Vice Chairman of Mang Canh Commune People's Committee, said that, through evaluation, Mr. A Pho's cold-climate vegetable growing model brings high economic efficiency. From Mr. A Pho's model, local people can visit, learn, and change crop structure to develop the economy and improve their lives. In the near future, the commune will survey households with land in favorable locations in terms of water resources, soil, etc. to replicate this model.
