Nong Cong district (Thanh Hoa) currently has more than 100 hectares of shallots, of which the largest is Truong Son commune with 70 hectares.
This year, the onion crop is good, but the price is half of what it was in 2024. Households are also harvesting sparingly. Currently, traders are buying at 20,000 VND/kg.
Recalling the previous onion crop, Ms. Nguyen Thi Luyen (58 years old), Van Do village, Truong Son commune said that with 6 sao of onions, her family harvested more than 3 tons, selling for 36,000-42,000 VND/kg. After deducting the cost of planting, care and labor, she made a profit of more than 100 million VND. This year, onion prices are low, and the number of traders coming to buy is also lower.

Mr. Nguyen Van Viet, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Truong Son Commune, Nong Cong District, said that chives have long been the main crop of the people in the commune. In 2024, with 35 hectares of chives, the whole commune earned more than 3 billion VND.
“This year, people have expanded their planting area, currently the whole commune has 70 hectares of shallots. Faced with the situation of falling onion prices, the Commune People's Committee and the Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative have contacted traders to support onion consumption, but the sales volume is insignificant,” Mr. Viet added.

Mr. Ngo The Thu, an expert from the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Nong Cong district, confirmed that the current price of shallots in the area is only 20,000 VND/kg, half the price compared to last year. At this price, even if farmers sell all their goods, they will only have enough money to invest, not make a profit.

“Nong Cong District is considered the "capital" of shallots in Thanh Hoa Province, with more than 100 hectares. Thanks to suitable soil and climate conditions, shallots grown here produce large, firm bulbs with a distinctive aroma. We recommend that people do not expand the area because agricultural production always has many potential risks due to market regulation," Mr. Thu added.
