Farmers earn high profits in winter-spring crop

Compared to previous years, the winter-spring crop of 2023 - 2024 has certain difficulties, especially severe drought, irrigation water sources are sometimes and locally lacking, but thanks to the attention, inspection and timely direction of the People's Committee of Tanh Linh district, the yield is high, averaging 74 quintals/ha, output is about 67,000 tons, reaching over 110% of the crop plan. With current prices ranging from 7,000 - 7,500 VND/kg, farmers earn from 25 - 30 million VND/ha.

Inspecting the 2023 - 2024 winter-spring rice crop areas that are being harvested, Mr. Mai Tri Man, Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tanh Linh district, said: The 2023 - 2024 winter-spring crop in the whole district produced a total planting area of 11,552/11,349 hectares, reaching nearly 102% of the crop plan, equal to 94.2% over the same period, of which 9,019 hectares of rice were planted, the main rice varieties used were OM4900, OM5451, OM6976, OM7347, OM2395, ML202. OM4900. Due to the hot weather in the first months of 2024 and the low discharge flow of Ham Thuan - Da Mi Hydropower Plant to the downstream of 27 - 32 m3/s, some localities of Dong Kho, Gia An, Duc Binh... experienced local water shortages in some areas. Thanks to proactive direction in drought prevention, especially through the results of working with Da Nhim - Ham Thuan - Da Mi Hydropower Company to propose the operation of Ham Thuan - Da Mi Hydropower Plant cluster from February 29, 2024 to March 31, 2024 to increase the average daily flow of at least 40 m3/s and the minimum time of 14 hours/day, the reasonable regulation of the pumping and irrigation schedule of Binh Thuan Irrigation Works Exploitation Company Limited - La Nga Branch and the initiative of water users of communes and towns, irrigation water for the production areas of the 2023 - 2024 winter-spring crop has basically been stabilized.

In this year's winter-spring crop, 312 hectares of rice varieties have been socialized, including 4 hectares of super-original varieties produced by Loc Troi Group Joint Stock Company in Dong Kho commune, and the remaining 304 hectares of original varieties produced in Duc Phu, Nghi Duc, Mang To, Bac Ruong, Huy Khiem, Dong Kho, Duc Binh, Duc Thuan, Gia An communes and Lac Tanh town. Farmers are increasingly interested in using certified rice varieties for rice production, thereby increasing the rate of certified rice varieties by over 95%. In order to encourage farmers to produce in the direction of high quality, in this crop, the district has supported rice land according to Decree No. 35 and Decree No. 62 of the Government with a total cost of over 3.7 billion VND...

In addition to the linkage according to Decree 98 of the Government, localities also linked with companies, enterprises, and cooperatives to produce 3,000 hectares of high-quality rice on over 3,400 hectares, the planned rice field area for the 2021-2025 period. With agricultural extension support funds, the district has built rice production models according to VietGAP standards with the "Tanh Linh Rice" brand on 79 hectares. The district's Agricultural Technical and Service Center has implemented an organic rice production model, applying the SRI process in cultivation in Duc Phu and Gia An communes with an area of 10 hectares under the industrial promotion program, with a yield of 7.5 tons/ha, 5 tons/ha higher than conventional production, with a profit of 4-5 million VND/ha higher.

To use water resources economically in the 2023 - 2024 winter-spring crop production, the localities of Duc Phu, Nghi Duc, Bac Ruong, Dong Kho, Lac Tanh, Gia An... have proactively converted to other crops on rice land with an area of 1,833 hectares; of which, 902 hectares were converted to corn, 552 hectares to beans of all kinds, and 379 hectares to peanuts. The conversion of crop structure in localities has effectively promoted flexibility in land use and increased the saving of irrigation water, limiting pests and diseases of rice for the following crops.

The 2023-2024 winter-spring crop in Tanh Linh district was successful, farmers earned high profits, but in reality, they still face many difficulties and challenges, such as hot weather and local water shortages. Pests and diseases that harm crops often appear, dense sowing, weedy rice, ghost rice, and double-layer rice are common in rice varieties... These are issues that require active solutions from local authorities in the coming time to help farmers feel secure in production, creating clean and sustainable agricultural products.
