Specialist Doctor 1 Bui Thi Yen Nhi, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Facility 3, said There are three ways to metabolize alcohol in the human body: in the liver, through sweat glands on the skin, and through the respiratory system, of which about 90% is metabolized through the liver's enzyme system thanks to two main enzymes: alcohol dehydrogenase and aldehyde dehydrogenase, creating the final products of carbon dioxide and water.
In the human body, if there are two types of enzymes above, alcohol will be broken down faster, the central nervous system will be less affected by alcohol. When drinking too much alcohol, exceeding the ability of the enzymes to break down or partially or completely lacking the metabolizing enzymes, you will fall into a state of drunkenness.
Therefore, during the spring, if you invite people to drink alcohol to celebrate the New Year, you should drink in small amounts, limit the consumption of strong alcohol, choose fruit wine or wine, do not try to drink too much, if you cannot avoid alcohol, then before drinking, you should pay attention to the following points to reduce the symptoms of drunkenness.
"Traditional medicine can help relieve hangovers by reducing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and epigastric fullness; clearing heat and detoxifying; reducing dizziness, lightheadedness, and talkativeness after drinking; and reducing thirst, dry throat, and restlessness after drinking," Dr. Nhi shared.
Arrowroot (Castachia)
This is a traditional medicine that is widely used to sober up. Kudzu root can improve metabolic disorders caused by alcohol. Therefore, after getting drunk, you can use 10-20g of kudzu root to sober up.
Green beans + licorice
Cook 50 grams of mung beans, 10 grams of licorice, add sugar, and enough water. It helps reduce vomiting, protect the liver, and help you sober up quickly after a hangover. You can also use just the decoction of mung beans to achieve the same effect.
Green beans cooked with licorice have the effect of reducing nausea and protecting the liver.
Honey water
The main ingredient is fructose, which has the ability to promote decomposition and effectively limit alcohol absorption, thereby reducing blood alcohol concentration, helping the mind to quickly become alert, eliminating headaches, dizziness, and hangovers after drinking alcohol.
Watermelon
Drinking 10-15 grams of watermelon rind juice after drinking alcohol reduces hangover, dizziness, headache, vomiting sour water after drinking, diuretic, speeds up alcohol metabolism.

Chrysanthemum + Cassia seed
According to traditional medicine, chrysanthemum has the effect of clearing the liver and detoxifying, helping to lower blood pressure, avoiding high blood pressure after drinking alcohol. Cassia seed has the effect of moistening the liver, laxative, lowering blood fat, and speeding up the process of metabolizing alcohol. Combining these two medicinal herbs to make tea after getting drunk will reduce the harmful effects of alcohol on the liver.
Note when drinking alcohol
Before drinking alcohol, you should eat food and avoid drinking on an empty stomach, because when hungry, the intestines will absorb alcohol faster than when mixed with food, making the drinker more likely to get drunk.
Half an hour before drinking alcohol, you can drink milk (whole fresh milk is best) to protect the stomach lining, prevent gastritis caused by alcohol, and promote the decomposition of ethanol.
Do not drink too fast or too much at once, as this will increase pressure on the liver and prevent the liver from metabolizing alcohol in time.
