Female entrepreneurs earn trillions for Vietnamese businesses

They are the ones who steer the most famous businesses in Vietnam, overcoming difficulties and achieving incredible success.

Ms. Cao Thi Ngoc Dung was born in 1957 in Quang Ngai, known as a steel businesswoman in the gold, silver and gemstone business. She is currently the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Phu Nhuan Jewelry Joint Stock Company (PNJ). Previously, she held both the positions of Chairwoman and General Director of PNJ from 2004 to 2018.

Under her leadership, PNJ has gradually built up its strength and outstanding cultural values, finding the link to connect the sustainable development ecosystem into a continuous chain.

After decades of development, PNJ now has 7,000 employees and more than 450 stores. Ms. Cao Thi Ngoc Dung has created a business philosophy for PNJ that is trust between departments. At the end of 2019, PNJ recorded a profit of up to 1,000 billion VND, revenue of up to 17,000 billion VND, holding more than 1/4 of the gold jewelry industry market share. The success of PNJ has helped the businesswoman own assets of more than 1,000 billion VND and for many years has been in the top richest people in Vietnam.

In 2022, Ms. Cao Thi Ngoc Dung was one of 60 people honored by VCCI as Outstanding Vietnamese Entrepreneurs 2022.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao was born in 1970 in Hanoi and is the founder of Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company (Vietjet Air). She graduated with a PhD in Economic Cybernetics from the Mendeleev Institute, a BA in Credit Finance from the Moscow Institute of Commerce, a BA in Labor Economics Management from the Moscow National Economics University, and a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Systems Studies.

According to Forbes' latest real ranking, Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao has an estimated fortune of 2.3 billion USD, ranking 1,284th on the list of world billionaires. She is currently the richest female billionaire in Vietnam.

To build Vietjet Air to the rapid growth it has today, Ms. Thao encountered many difficulties when she first started. Besides, she also had to endure pressure from big companies like Vietnam Airlines and the scrutiny of the market.

Under her skillful leadership, Vietjet Air has grown rapidly. During the period from 2014 to 2016, this airline occupied 29% of the market share.

As of 2019, Vietjet has captured more than 40% of the domestic market share, recording business profits in its second year of taking off.

According to the first quarter 2023 business results report, Vietjet's air transport revenue reached VND12,880 billion. The airline's after-tax profit reached VND168 billion, an increase of 320% over the same period in 2022. As of March 31, 2023, Vietjet's total assets reached more than VND69 trillion.

Currently, in addition to her position as Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Vietjet Air, she is also Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Sovico, a multi-industry economic group, contributing to the growth of the private economic sector, helping to create the image of an integrated, self-reliant, innovative and developed country. At the same time, she is also the Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of HDBank - a modern bank that has grown continuously over the past 10 years from a modest scale when it began to innovate.

Ms. Nguyen Bach Diep, born in 1972, is currently the Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of FPT Retail. She graduated from Ho Chi Minh City Open University with a degree in Business Administration. Immediately after graduating from university, Ms. Bach Diep started working at FPT, a leading technology corporation and the parent company of FPT Retail since 1997.

Under her leadership, in 2022, the Long Chau pharmacy chain under FPT Retail achieved extremely impressive milestones when reaching 1,000 stores, 5 million customers coming to shop/month; more than 2.5 million customers shopping on the online platform/month while the FPT Long Chau Pharmacy application also reached more than 2 million users after 1 year of launch.

At the General Meeting of Shareholders on April 14, 2023, FPT Retail unanimously approved a revenue plan of VND 34,000 billion, an increase of 13%, and pre-tax profit of VND 240 billion, a decrease of 51% compared to the results of 2022.

In 2022, despite economic difficulties, FPT Retail still recorded strong growth in revenue, specifically, accumulated consolidated revenue reached VND 30,166 billion, up 34% over the same period, completing 112% of the yearly plan.

Of which, FPTShop chain achieved revenue of VND 20,689 billion, up 11% over the same period; Long Chau chain's revenue reached an impressive VND 9,596 billion, 2.4 times higher than in 2021.

Mai Kieu Lien was born in 1953 in Paris (France) into a Vietnamese intellectual family, both of her parents were doctors. In 1957, her family returned to Vietnam. After graduating from high school, she went to the Soviet Union to study milk and meat processing in Moscow.

Returning to Vietnam, Ms. Mai Kieu Lien was appointed Director of Vietnam Dairy Products Company (Vinamilk) at the age of 31. When she took the leadership position of this enterprise in 2003, she brought the Vinamilk milk brand closer to consumers in the country and 23 other countries.

With her dedication and business and leadership talent, Ms. Lien was voted one of Asia's outstanding CEOs in the field of investor relations. Not only is she among the top most successful female entrepreneurs in Vietnam, she has also been honored by Forbes Magazine four times in a row in the top 50 most powerful female entrepreneurs in Asia.

During her 47 years at Vinamilk, this female leader has applied her knowledge, thinking, and creativity as a technician and scientist to develop Vinamilk from a solid foundation, contributing to the development of the milk processing and dairy farming industry in Vietnam.

Currently, Vinamilk operates 16 factories and 14 farms in and outside the country. Vinamilk has also made its mark on the world dairy map with the 36th position in the group of 50 leading dairy companies in the world in terms of revenue (according to Plimsoll, 2021) and is the only representative of Southeast Asia on this list.

According to Brand Finance's 2022 Food & Beverage Industry Report, Vinamilk continues to "set a new record" by increasing its brand value by 18%, reaching 2.8 billion USD, rising to the position of the most potential brand in the global dairy industry.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nga, born in 1955, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of BRG Group, Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of SeABank - is one of the most influential female entrepreneurs in Vietnam. This "female general" has led BRG Group from import-export activities before investing in banking, hotels, golf courses and many other fields.

Ms. Nga has been consistently listed on Forbes Vietnam's list of influential women. Ms. Nga started her business in the early 1990s. In 1993, she and her husband founded BRG Group, a multi-industry investment group and one of the largest private enterprises in Vietnam.

Ms. Nga is also famous for M&A deals, including equitized state-owned enterprises, private enterprises and joint ventures.

Under her leadership, BRG Group pioneered in many fields such as golf, hotels, real estate. In addition, she also invested widely in fields from finance - banking, import-export, retail, tourism and agriculture.

Ms. Nga is considered an inspiration for the next generation of female entrepreneurs, that women can confidently build businesses, overcome difficulties to take their businesses far, and contribute to the country's socio-economic development.

In 2006, after divesting from Techcombank, Ms. Nga invested and became Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of SeABank.

In early 2019, Ms. Nga left the position of Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of SeABank and retired to the position of Permanent Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of SeABank since April 12, 2019. In addition to SeABank, Ms. Nga also participates in the Board of Directors/Executive Board at a series of enterprises in the "ecosystem" of BRG Group.
