(Dan Tri) - In the past two years, Muong Lat district, Thanh Hoa province has received more than 100 applications to be removed from the list of poor households. This is considered a miracle in the poverty reduction effort in one of the poorest localities in the country.
Mr. Tang Van Sinh (36 years old, in Suoi Tut village, Quang Chieu commune) is one of more than 100 households in Muong Lat district who voluntarily wrote a request to be removed from the list of poor households. This is a bold and meaningful step in the fight against poverty in this border area.
Before 2010, Sinh’s family of 8 members lived on a few hectares of cassava and corn. Since 2013, he has learned and applied the model of growing Lao oranges, combined with raising cows to develop the family economy. His wife works as a hired worker in Dak Lak.
Efforts from both ends of the country help the family earn nearly 200 million VND per year.

In 2024, when he had a stable economic source, Mr. Sinh decided to write an application to be removed from the list of poor households.
"I am young, healthy, have a job and an income, but if I keep the label of "sustainable poverty", I will be ashamed. I have to set an example for my brothers, sisters, and neighbors in the village," Sinh shared.
No longer receiving support policies from the government, he has to make more efforts, but Mr. Sinh is proud to be able to give that support to more disadvantaged households. He has also mobilized 8 other families in the village to be determined to escape poverty.
Mr. Vi Van Thu, Vice Chairman of Quang Chieu Commune People's Committee, said that in the past, local people often depended on state support. However, thanks to the propaganda and guidance from officials, many households have boldly borrowed capital to develop the economy.

Currently, Quang Chieu commune has 10 hectares of land growing Lao oranges, more than 300 people working far away and the poverty rate has decreased to 13.66%. Average income per capita reaches 42 million VND/year.
Mr. Thu emphasized that voluntarily asking to escape poverty is not just an action on paper but has been realized.
"When people know how to do business and have a source of income, they are not afraid of poverty. They confidently cross the "line" and write applications to escape poverty," said Mr. Thu.
According to the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Muong Lat district, since 2023, more than 100 applications to be removed from the list of poor households have been submitted, concentrated in Quang Chieu and Muong Chanh communes. This is a miracle in the poverty eradication revolution in the border area.
Mr. Truong Van Binh, Head of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Muong Lat district, said that the poverty rate of the district has continuously decreased, reaching only 25.85% by 2024. In early 2025, Muong Lat had its first new rural commune.
Mr. Trieu Minh Xiet, Standing Deputy Secretary of Muong Lat District Party Committee, emphasized the importance of "eliminating poverty from thinking" to reduce economic poverty. "Many households with better economic conditions have voluntarily applied to be removed from the list of poor and near-poor households," Mr. Xiet said.
The fact that people voluntarily apply to escape poverty not only helps local authorities promote the emulation movement to develop the socio-economy, but also demonstrates changes in their awareness, thinking, and aspirations to rise up.
Mr. Xiet said that 2024 is the first year after nearly 30 years of the district's establishment that Muong Lat does not have to ask the province for rice to relieve hunger during the lean season. To sustainably eliminate poverty, the locality will develop a specific plan, support vocational training, and create jobs for workers.
