Impressive numbers on digital economic development in Ho Chi Minh City

(NLDO) - Ho Chi Minh City is the locality with the highest ratio of digital technology enterprises per 1,000 people in the country.


The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has just reported on the implementation results of the Project "Developing digital economy, sharing economy and circular economy in Ho Chi Minh City for the period 2020 - 2025, with a vision to 2030".

According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the implementation of the project has been on track, in line with the progress of building the legal and management framework from the Central Government and has achieved some initial results. Enterprises and organizations are increasingly interested in learning and researching the application of digital economy, sharing economy, and circular economy in production and business activities.

Implementing the project, the digital economy has achieved many outstanding results. According to the estimate of the Ministry of Information and Communications, the city's digital economy in 2022 will account for 18.86% of GRDP and rank 7th in the country. By 2023, Ho Chi Minh City will have a digital economy ratio of 21.5% in GRDP, an increase of 28% compared to 2022 and be in the group of 9 localities with a high digital economy ratio of over 20%.

In terms of ICT digital economy, Ho Chi Minh City is the locality with the highest ratio of digital technology enterprises/1,000 people in the country, at 3.1. The digital economy of the industry, field, and city also has many advantages, belonging to the group of 3 localities with the highest ratio of e-commerce revenue/total retail revenue.

According to the General Statistics Office's estimates, the proportion of added value of the digital economy in Ho Chi Minh City's GRDP in 2020-2023 is 12.62% in 2020, 13.84% in 2021, 13.51% in 2022 and 14.65% in 2023 (ranked 7th in the country).

Regarding the future orientation, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee said that in the "era of national development", with the aspiration to develop a strong and prosperous country, Vietnam is not outside the world's development trends, considering this an opportunity for strategic transformation, a leap in socio-economic development.

In particular, developing the digital economy is the key to helping the country escape the "middle-income trap" and move towards the goal of becoming a developed country by 2045.

Ho Chi Minh City ranks 2nd in innovation index

The city's innovative startup ecosystem is growing stronger and stronger, approaching the Top 100 cities with the most dynamic innovative startup ecosystems globally, ranking 6th in Southeast Asia and ranked 2nd in the local innovation index announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology; attracting 44% of investment capital and 60% of the total number of deals nationwide.

The city currently has over 2,200 startups, accounting for about 50% of the country, of which startups in the information technology sector account for more than 65%, agriculture accounts for 20% and other sectors account for 15%.

Every year, there are about 500 events on innovative startups with nearly 100 universities, colleges and secondary schools participating.

The number of organizations supporting startups in the city increased 1.87 times after 5 years from 24 organizations in 2017 to 45 organizations in 2023. The number of investment funds also doubled from nearly 50 funds in 2017, by 2023 there were nearly 200 venture capital funds operating in the city.
