Currently, in Ho Chi Minh City, there are 13 religions with 33 religious organizations recognized by the State, granted certificates of registration of operation with 2,970 religious establishments; there are more than 3.9 million followers, more than 10,000 dignitaries, more than 3,000 officials...
According to the leader of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, recognizing the importance, role and prestige of religions in the area, from 2015 - 2020, the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment signed agreements with religions in environmental protection and climate change response. As a result, many solutions have been implemented to promote the role of religious organizations in environmental protection and climate change response through specific activities, suitable to the characteristics of each religion and residential area.
In particular, religions have built many models of environmental protection and climate change response suitable to the specific conditions of each locality and religion. These models have brought about practical results, contributing to creating a strong shift in awareness and changing the attitudes, behaviors, and habits of religious dignitaries, officials, monks, nuns, and people in the community in environmental protection and climate change response.
Specifically, religious establishments have coordinated with the Vietnam Fatherland Front system at all levels to build and maintain nearly 200 models and effective methods to protect the environment and respond to climate change, of which Buddhism has 57 models, Catholicism has 16 models... Typical models include: "Garbage-free residential areas - parishes", "Green, clean, beautiful parishes" in Districts: 4, 8, Tan Binh, Binh Tan, Go Vap; Model of Buddhist youth spending 15 minutes every day cleaning the grounds inside and in front of the temple gate and keeping the house clean and tidy...
Based on those comprehensive results, in 2022, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City and 33 religious organizations continued to sign the Coordination Program "Promoting the role of religions in participating in environmental protection and responding to climate change in the period of 2022 - 2026". Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City strives to have 100% of religious dignitaries, officials, monks and nuns, religious organizations, and affiliated religious organizations have access to information and actively respond to and participate in environmental protection and climate change response by the end of 2026...
In particular, the Coordination Program will promote the role of religious organizations and believers to actively contribute to the implementation of the Environmental Pollution Reduction Program for the period 2020 - 2030; the Plan to Build a Green - Environmentally Friendly City for the period 2021 - 2025; Directive No. 19/CT-TU of the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee on the Campaign for City People to Not Litter on the Streets and Canals...
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh My - Deputy Director of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City said: In the coming time, the Department of Natural Resources and Environment will continue to develop and orient communication content, as well as disseminate documents to support communication work on environmental protection and climate change response suitable for religious organizations; continue to support religious organizations to maintain, promote and replicate environmental protection models, respond to environmental protection... in the city.

Recently, in a series of events to celebrate the 93rd Anniversary of the Vietnam Fatherland Front's Traditional Day, the Standing Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City coordinated with the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Ho Chi Minh City to honor 40 models participating in environmental protection and responding to climate change in religious communities in the city.
According to the leader of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, after 8 years of implementing the Program of coordination to promote the role of religions in environmental protection and climate change response with 33 religious organizations in the city, many models of environmental protection and climate change response have emerged. Thereby, attracting millions of followers and religious people to join hands in environmental protection and greening the living environment.
Based on the selection from 112 models proposed by the establishments, the Organizing Committee commended 40 typical and effective models participating in environmental protection and responding to climate change that have been implemented by religious organizations, religious establishments, folk belief establishments and residential areas in the period of 2020 - 2023.
