For Mr. Ly, although he only has a very small part of Vietnamese blood, his love and attachment to his ancestral homeland - the S-shaped strip of land - is always strong and steadfast.
The beginning of a relationship
Mr. Ly used Vietnamese to begin his sharing about the migration eight centuries ago of his ancestors whom he called “the forgotten prince”.
More than 800 years ago, Prince (also known as uncle) Ly Long Tuong (born in the year of Giap Ngo - 1174), son of King Ly Anh Tong (1138 - 1175), grew up during the period when the Ly dynasty declined and was gradually replaced by the Tran dynasty.
In the context of the mutiny, in 1226, Prince Ly Long Tuong and some members of the Ly royal family tried to escape by sea, avoiding going abroad to save their lives and take care of their ancestors. During his journey, this prince found a safe haven on the Korean peninsula and decided to stay there.
With gratitude to his second homeland, Prince Ly Long Tuong actively participated in activities to protect the territory of Goryeo, especially in the wars against foreign invasions. Through his achievements and contributions, the prince and the Ly family gradually became a part of the land of Goryeo. Later, the Ly family gradually moved to the South (present-day Korea) to build the foundation for the long-standing friendly relationship between the two peoples of Vietnam and Korea.
Despite many generations, the Ly family in Korea still preserves Vietnamese cultural values. For Ambassador Ly Xuong Can, love for his roots is an inseparable part, always present in his life.
Contribute to promoting Vietnam
In 2024, Mr. Ly Xuong Can took on the role of Vietnam Tourism Ambassador to Korea for the third term (2024-2029). In this role, he will continue his long-standing passion: promoting the image of Vietnam to the Korean community as well as the world.
As Vietnam's tourism ambassador in Korea, Mr. Ly said, he always tries to promote the potential of Vietnamese localities to the Korean business community, helping them identify investment opportunities in little-known localities.
“However, I also hope that the Vietnamese Government will develop a support strategy to help spread foreign investment more evenly across the country. For example, some provinces in the Central region, the Mekong Delta, or some northern provinces outside Hanoi have not yet attracted investment commensurate with their potential. These localities are in great need of resources for development, and each has its own advantages,” he said.
Mr. Ly Xuong Can often uses social networks TikTok and YouTube to interact with people, especially the Vietnamese community both at home and abroad. This connection brings him many meaningful experiences.
“When I shared information on social networks, I received warm comments from Vietnamese people - such as sharing wishes to meet, or sincere words of encouragement. These are truly precious feelings, and I appreciate every word of encouragement,” said Mr. Ly Xuong Can.
