The visit took place in the context of the two countries celebrating the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations (1973–2023), marking an important milestone in strengthening and promoting bilateral relations between Vietnam and Belgium in many fields.
The visit of the King and Queen of Belgium is expected to open up many new opportunities for strategic cooperation, especially in the fields of innovation, education, energy transition and sustainable development, contributing to the increasingly deep and substantial development of Vietnam - Belgium relations.
Belgium was one of the first Western European countries to establish a development cooperation relationship with Vietnam. Economic relations between the two countries have grown strongly over the past decade, especially since the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) came into effect in 2020. Bilateral trade turnover reached a record 4.5 billion euros in 2022, with the balance tilted in favor of Vietnam.
Belgium is currently Vietnam's fourth largest export market in the EU and Vietnam's second largest trading partner in ASEAN. Belgian businesses invest in many areas in Vietnam such as seaports, food industry, pharmaceuticals and renewable energy.
The King visited Vietnam in 1993, 2003 and 2012 as Crown Prince Philippe. The King loves Vietnam and has a deep impression of the beautiful country and hospitable people.
