Veteran Nguyen Van Thanh - Head of Vinh Trung village (Luu Vinh Son commune).

In 1972, when he was just 18 years old, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (born in 1954) joined the army and became a soldier of Division 341, Military Region 4. After that, he and his comrades fought in the Southeast region. In October 1977, he continued to fight to protect the Southwest border.

During his time fighting at the border, Mr. Thanh was hit by bullets and mines twice, causing a third of his left arm to be severed, and injuries to his head and left leg. In addition, due to the effects of the war, Mr. Thanh was also exposed to Agent Orange/dioxin.

After being seriously injured, Mr. Thanh was sent to Hanoi for treatment. By 1985, his health was more stable, and he returned to his hometown with a disability rate of 81% - a 1/4 class disabled veteran.

In his hometown, he actively participated in the Executive Committee of Trung Vinh Cooperative (formerly Thach Vinh commune), the district tax team... In 1995, he was elected by the people as Secretary of the Vinh Trung village Party Cell.

Mr. Thanh often visits people's homes to inquire about their thoughts and aspirations.

Mr. Thanh said: “As a former soldier, I was honored to be admitted to the Party in 1979, so I am clearly aware that I must try to overcome difficulties and actively set an example to help the people. Therefore, when I was elected as Party Cell Secretary, I worked with organizations to help people strive to develop the economy and build a new life.”

It is known that before building the new rural area, the material and spiritual life of Vinh Trung villagers still faced many difficulties, and infrastructure was lacking. In 2017, Vinh Trung village began to build a model residential area. Determining that the first thing to help people change their lives was to eliminate poverty sustainably, Mr. Thanh mobilized his children who were far from home and the villagers to promote the spirit of "the rich help the poor". Since then, he has mobilized more than 400 million VND to help 13 poor households and households with disabled people in the village rebuild more solid houses.

Ms. Pham Thi Lan - a resident of Vinh Trung village said: “In 2017, my family received 50 million VND from the amount that Mr. Thanh mobilized his children and grandchildren to donate. That amount of money helped the family build a more spacious house. In 2018, my family continued to receive 2 million VND from the above support source to build a toilet. Thanks to that, my family has had the conditions to develop the economy with peace of mind. We are always grateful for the help of the villagers and Mr. Thanh”.

Mrs. Lan (in purple) is happy to have lived in a more spacious house for many years.

To build a new countryside, Mr. Thanh and other organizations have mobilized people to donate land, demolish fences to expand village roads and alleys. From 2017 to now, the whole village has donated more than 1,700m2 of residential land, more than 2,000m2 of fences , and built more than 1,200m of concrete roads within the fields... Mr. Thanh himself has voluntarily donated nearly 100m2 of garden land to expand inter-commune roads.

With the efforts of Mr. Thanh, the people and organizations, in 2020, Vinh Trung village was recognized as a model residential area. Also in that year, Mr. Thanh was elected as Head of Vinh Trung village.

Since the construction of the new rural area, the security and order situation of Vinh Trung village has been more guaranteed thanks to security cameras.

Mr. Thanh shared: "Although there were times when the weather changed and my old wound ached, I still endured the pain because my people trusted me to complete the common work. My children and grandchildren sometimes advised me to rest, but I always told myself to maintain the spirit of Uncle Ho's soldier, not to give up or falter in the face of anything."

Up to now, after many efforts of the village cadre union and the people, Vinh Trung village has really "changed its clothes", the material and spiritual life of the people has been improved. 100% of the traffic routes in the village are concreted. On both sides of the road are rows of green trees, with electric lights. The whole village has 223 households but currently there are only 3 poor households and 1 near-poor household. The average income of the village has reached 52 million VND/person/year.

Nearly 70 years old, Village Chief Nguyen Van Thanh still works tirelessly on his motorbike, going to every alley to help people build a new life.

In recognition of Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh's contributions, Party committees, authorities, and socio-political organizations from the central to local levels have awarded him many certificates of merit. Typically, in 2017, he was awarded a certificate of merit by the Provincial Fatherland Front Committee for his outstanding achievements in the hunger eradication and poverty reduction movement; in 2022, he was one of 7 delegates from Ha Tinh attending the ceremony to honor people with revolutionary contributions in Hanoi.

Mr. Thanh is an exemplary veteran, typical of the locality. He always maintains and promotes the nature and tradition of Uncle Ho's soldiers. In social work, from the role of Party cell secretary to village chief, he is devoted to the common work, a shining example, enthusiastic, dedicated, especially in the movement to build new rural areas and help the poor. Mr. Thanh's example is also typical in studying and following the ideology, morality and style of Ho Chi Minh in the locality.
