(NLDO) – Not only is he a dedicated scientist, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Dinh Quan is also known as a "good teacher".
In the field of science and technology, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Dinh Quan is not only a dedicated scientist with highly applicable research projects, but also a "cool hand" teacher, who inspires the passion for successful startups for many generations of students.
Currently, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Quan is Head of the Biofuel and Biomass Laboratory, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (VNU-HCM).
Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Dinh Quan is a former student of Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology. After graduating, he continued to pursue scientific research and completed his doctoral program at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology in 2008.
After that, he returned to Vietnam, not only teaching but also devoting a lot of his passion to guiding and supporting students in starting their own businesses until now.
"Scientific research must be oriented towards practical application, absolutely not just research to achieve results"
Narrowing the gap between teachers and students
Although he has not graduated from university, Ngo Tran Bao Viet, a chemical engineering student at the University of Technology - VNU-HCM, has his own laundry detergent brand on the market. The number of orders has increased significantly in the days leading up to Tet.
Viet confided that he plans to soon join the laboratory, start scientific research and carry out practical projects from his second year of university.
The student smiled and said: "The first time I sent an email to the teacher to express my wishes. I fumbled around for a while, before I could finish writing anything, I accidentally pressed send."
Viet was extremely embarrassed because he thought the teacher would blame him and he would "lose points". At that time, teacher Quan just gently said: "It's okay, we will still work together a lot, don't be so concerned about small things."
"At that moment, I felt an open heart, closeness and more motivation to do scientific research" - Viet recalled.
Looking at the bottles of laundry detergent that were about to be delivered, Viet cherished the time he spent “living and sleeping” in the lab researching his own brand of laundry detergent. Although he had not yet graduated, he was able to be financially independent and help his family.
"He taught me both professional knowledge and important life skills. He instilled in me confidence and a love of learning. Next, he encouraged me to always think creatively, explore new things, and constantly expand my limits," Viet confided.
Bringing students to the big sea
Vuong Hong Linh, a student at the University of Technology, is gradually commercializing an anti-counterfeiting technology application called DeepVoucher. This is also a project that Associate Professor, Dr. Quan is participating in guiding.
"I have not taken any classes from Mr. Quan, but I have had the opportunity to work with him for nearly a year. In the beginning, he was very patient in explaining the basic concepts of blockchain to me. When I understood a little better, he connected me with international experts to continue my research. This is an honor and luck for me" - Linh said slowly.
"Blockchain is not just about virtual currency" is a saying that Linh will always remember. Teacher Quan explained that, in the midst of the "blooming" virtual currency market, a person who understands blockchain well should choose the direction of serving society instead of "reaping the sweet fruit" from virtual currency, that is the long-term value.
During his time at the school, Associate Professor Nguyen Dinh Quan has nurtured many young entrepreneurs, and many projects have reached the big sea. For Professor Quan, scientific research does not need to be "big" projects.
According to Mr. Quan, a team of high-quality human resources must come from practical experience associated with production and research and development. High degrees and academic titles do not necessarily mean high-quality human resources, especially when science and education are still plagued by the disease of achievement. In other words, scientists must affirm the value of their work.
"Scientists must play the role of a startup, and the source of funding, even the role of an investor. Announcing research results and only stopping at research without applying and commercializing them in practice cannot bring benefits to society" - Associate Professor Quan emphasized.
