From October 4 to March 30, 2024, at the Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) in Hanoi, the installation exhibition A Tide of Emotions by Japanese artist Chiharu Shiota will take place.
Emotional Tides are works made exclusively for VCCA space. They are red thread networks connecting old boats bearing the mark of time covering a large space, making viewers feel many emotions.
Red thread is a typical material for Chiharu Shiota’s artistic practice. In the exhibition, the image of hundreds of thousands of threads is like a path weaving between the past and the present, evoking the calligraphy art of the ancient world and the tradition of thousands of looms.
Artist Pham Thai Binh - Head of the Design Department, University of Architecture - said he was moved when he saw the works of famous Vietnamese artist Chiharu Shiota. According to him, the more famous the artist, the more it proves the popularity of their work.
"Ms. Chiharu Shiota has influenced many young artists in the world, including artists in Vietnam. Looking at her paintings, I feel like I am standing in front of a "sacred temple". From this exhibition, we can see that through art, artists can touch the emotions of viewers. Through the works, viewers can listen to the thoughts and messages of the author.
The more famous the artist, the more clearly the professionalism in the work is shown. These are sophisticated works with popular appeal," commented artist Thai Binh.
Present at the exhibition, artist Trinh Tuan said he felt many emotions when standing "inside" an installation work, which was a monumental and creative work.
"Ms. Chiharu Shiota has had many installation exhibitions around the world. What is new in this exhibition is that she has cleverly incorporated contemporary life objects such as wool rolls and old Vietnamese boats. Looking at these boats, the audience imagines themselves standing in a very familiar sea area of Vietnam.
With this installation exhibition, we have interacted and connected with international artists. We hope that in the future, there will be more international artists coming to Vietnam to hold exhibitions," Mr. Tuan expressed.
Emotional Tide is Chiharu Shiota's first event in Vietnam. She was born in 1972, is a Japanese contemporary artist, currently living and working in Berlin, Germany.
Chiharu Shiota is among the most talented and successful contemporary artists in the world today, with her works displayed in many prestigious museums and exhibitions in the region. In particular, she was selected as the artist representing Japan to participate in the Venice Biennale (2015), the oldest and most prestigious international exhibition held every two years in Venice, Italy.
