Nghe An strives to complete community flood shelters before the storm season

Việt NamViệt Nam06/09/2023

Every year, during the rainy season, the localities outside the Ta Lam dike in Hung Nguyen district often suffer from flooding. Households with stilt houses or mezzanines move their belongings to higher ground, while families that cannot afford to build houses must move their assets and livestock to the dike to avoid the flood.

Faced with these difficulties, the Nghe An Provincial Fatherland Front Committee has mobilized and connected with units and banks to build flood shelters for people outside the dike in Hung Nguyen District. After the survey, 3 localities have built flood shelters, including Chau Nhan, Long Xa and Hung Linh communes. Currently, the localities are determined to complete these community houses before the storm season, which is expected to be unpredictable this year.

Up to now, only 1 community flood shelter house in Chau Nhan commune has been inaugurated and put into use. The project is located in hamlet 7, is a 2-storey house with a total floor area of nearly 485m2, of which the first floor is used for entertainment and community activities; the second floor is used for community activities, flood shelter, stage and other auxiliary works.

According to the reporter's observation, this community house has all the necessary items for people to live and take shelter from storms safely if they evacuate. On the second floor of the house, there is a kitchen area, toilet, and clean water system, where people can temporarily stay for a period of time.

The remaining two community houses in Long Xa and Hung Linh communes are currently in the final stages. Units are focusing on completing them so they can be put into operation before this year's storm season.

In Long Xa commune, the project has an area of over 200m2, built in Thanh Son hamlet. In Hung Linh commune, the project has an area of about 260m2, built in hamlet 2. Both projects have 2 floors, the first floor is used for community activities, the second floor is a multi-function room and a place to take shelter from storms.

The 3 flood shelters in Hung Nguyen district cost a total of about 7.6 billion VND, and were connected by the Provincial Fatherland Front Committee and called for support from the Korean Keb-Hana Bank and BIDV. Up to now, the flood shelters in Chau Nhan commune have been completed. We also coordinated with Hung Nguyen district and the District Fatherland Front Committee to direct construction units to speed up the progress to complete the remaining houses before this year's storm season so that people outside the dike can live in peace and reduce their worries when the flood comes...
