On October 25, at the press conference for the third quarter of 2023 organized by the People's Committee of Da Nang City, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City, Le Thi Bich Thuan, said that students in the whole city were off school for many consecutive days, greatly affecting the people. However, due to the complicated weather, the industry leaders were extremely worried.
Previously, in mid-October, heavy rains occurred throughout Da Nang City, causing flooding in many areas. Accordingly, the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City decided to let students throughout the city take a day off from school.
Specifically, from the afternoon of October 13, the Da Nang Department of Education announced that students would be off school. On the afternoon of October 16, the Da Nang Department of Education and Training announced that students would return to school from October 17. However, early in the morning of October 17, due to continued heavy rain, students were again off school.
The urgent announcement caused many parents to return home from school. Many were upset because they did not know who to leave their children with.
On October 19, students in Da Nang City returned to school after a five-day break. Notably, on October 16, 17 and 18, despite forecasts of heavy rain and a high risk of flooding, Da Nang had little rain and only localized flooding in some areas, causing mixed public opinion.
Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City Le Thi Bich Thuan informed about the conflicting opinions surrounding the decision to let students stay home from school for many days due to extreme weather.
At the press conference, the Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City said that in such complex weather conditions, it is difficult to predict what problems will occur. During that time, the city's education sector has closely coordinated with the City's Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue, and the Center for Hydrometeorology to determine information related to rainfall. From there, the Department asked for direction from the city's leaders, and at the same time coordinated with other sectors to make decisions on letting students stay home from school.
"We have considered it very carefully because letting students stay home from school will greatly affect parents as well as students. But in such a complicated weather situation, we and everyone are also very worried. Therefore, we hope that parents as well as people in the city will share with us during this time," said Ms. Le Thi Bich Thuan.
The Director of the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang City added that in the coming time, the Department will consider plans to notify earlier when complicated weather occurs as well as have a plan to teach students if they lack points or classes due to having to take time off due to storms.
