Russia is advancing at a steady pace in the Donetsk region thanks to its overwhelming advantage in weapons and troops.

Storozheve and the village of Velyka Novosilka lie close to the southern front line, which has so far remained largely quiet. However, Ukraine says Russia is planning a new offensive there.

According to observers, Russia is seeking to control as much of Ukraine's territory as possible before US President-elect Donald Trump officially takes office at the end of January next year.

The Russian military claims to have captured more than 190 settlements in Ukraine since the beginning of the year. Kyiv has not responded to this information.

Also on December 23, Mr. Denis Pushilin, head of the Russian-controlled Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), announced that Russian forces had captured the Severny area of Chasov Yar, TASS reported.

Could Donald Trump meet President Putin next year?

Some countries propose to hold Putin-Trump dialogue

Kremlin foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said on December 23 that Moscow had received proposals from several countries to host a dialogue between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President-elect Donald Trump next year. However, the adviser declined to name these countries.

Mr. Trump has said he wants to end the war in Ukraine quickly, although he has not yet laid out a specific agenda for this plan. A few days ago, President Putin said he was ready to talk with Mr. Trump and that the meeting could be held without Ukraine having to meet the preconditions before sitting down at the negotiating table, according to Reuters.

However, the Kremlin chief also made it clear that any dialogue should be based on the preliminary agreement reached between Russia and Ukraine during talks in Istanbul in the first weeks of the conflict as a starting point.

The agreement was never implemented.

In a related development, in an interview with The Washington Post published on December 23, a senior official of President Volodymyr Zelensky's administration admitted that Kyiv officials "are beginning to believe" that the conflict with Russia will be resolved in 2025.
