Sergei Naryshkin, head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), said Moscow is close to achieving its goals in Ukraine and that Kyiv's military is on the verge of collapse.
"The situation on the front lines is not favorable for Kyiv. The strategic initiative in all regions belongs to us. We are close to achieving our goals while the Ukrainian armed forces are on the verge of collapse," Sergei Naryshkin, Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), told the SVR's news magazine Razvedchik on December 10, according to TASS.

According to Naryshkin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has lost his legitimacy and negotiating ability in the eyes of Russia. Furthermore, he believes that all attempts to destabilize Russia have failed.
"People understand that we are fighting not only against the Kyiv military regime but also against the entire Western bloc, and that our freedom and sovereignty are threatened in this confrontation," Naryshkin said.
Zelensky said Ukraine is ready for a diplomatic solution with Russia.
The intelligence chief argued that further escalation of tensions would not deplete Russia's resources but would only bring the West closer to defeat.
According to Reuters, Naryshkin is one of the few high-ranking Russian officials who communicate relatively regularly with US and Western officials. Naryshkin's views may partly reflect the views of the Kremlin leadership.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he is ready to discuss a ceasefire with Ukraine with US President-elect Donald Trump, but ruled out territorial concessions, while demanding that Kyiv abandon its ambitions to join NATO, according to Reuters. Putin also stipulated that a peace agreement must include full control of the four Ukrainian provinces that Moscow unilaterally annexed in 2022.
On December 9, President Zelensky mentioned the possibility of ending the conflict through diplomacy, but also alluded to the idea of sending foreign troops to Ukraine until the country joins NATO.
