Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks at the Future Technologies Forum in Moscow on February 21.
Mr Putin explained that such weapons could not be developed earlier due to a lack of suitable materials. "The whole world is talking about Oreshnik. And what material is it made of? The temperature of its warhead is comparable to the temperature of the sun, the temperature on the surface of the sun," Mr Putin stressed.
The surface of the Sun has a temperature of more than 5,500 degrees Celsius. In November 2024, President Putin said the temperature of the Oreshnik warhead plunging towards its target could reach 4,000 degrees Celsius. He claimed that the Oreshnik warhead could penetrate "heavily protected targets deep underground. Everything in the center of the strike would be crushed into dust."
Putin challenges the West to 'technological battle' against Oreshnik missile
President Putin announced on November 21, 2024 that Moscow had for the first time used a new medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile called "Oreshnik" to attack a Ukrainian military facility.
US officials said that Moscow had informed Washington before carrying out the Oreshnik missile attack, and that the US had also briefed Ukraine to prepare for the possibility of an attack.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on November 22, 2024 that the attack on Ukraine with Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missiles was a message to the West that Moscow would respond harshly to any "reckless" Western actions in support of Ukraine, according to Reuters.
Also at the Future Technologies Forum in Moscow on February 21, President Putin emphasized the importance of promoting chemistry and developing new materials, helping to open up new technological opportunities, according to AA.
Regarding the possibility of foreign companies returning to Russia, Putin stressed the importance of maintaining attention to this issue in order to protect the potential of Russian business. He also reiterated that Russia has no intention of creating barriers to cooperation with Western scientists and has extended invitations to foreign scientists to cooperate, stating that "our doors are always open."
