(Dan Tri) - A senior Russian official warned US President-elect Donald Trump that Moscow could resume nuclear testing.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, who oversees Russia’s arms control, warned the incoming Trump administration on December 27 that Moscow was considering a series of steps related to nuclear testing, due to what Russia considers Trump’s aggressive stance on the issue.
Mr. Ryabkov accused Mr. Trump of taking an "extreme" stance on the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) during his first term (2017-2021).
"The current international situation is extremely difficult, US policy in many aspects is extremely hostile to us," Mr. Ryabkov said.
"Therefore, our actions to ensure security, along with measures and actions that can be taken to send appropriate political signals - beyond what experts are considering - do not rule out any possibility (related to nuclear testing)," he warned.
During his first term, the Trump administration reportedly discussed whether the US should resume nuclear testing for the first time since 1992, according to the Washington Post.
Russia has not conducted any nuclear tests since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The last Soviet test was in 1990. President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia would consider testing nuclear weapons if the United States did so first.
Since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, only a handful of countries have conducted nuclear tests, according to the Arms Control Association. The United States last tested in 1992, China and France in 1996, India and Pakistan in 1998, and North Korea in 2017.
As the US and its European allies grant Ukraine permission to strike deep into Russia with Western missiles, speculation is growing that Russia could resume nuclear testing in response.
In September, Andrei Sinitsyn, head of Russia's nuclear test site at Novaya Zemlya, said the facility was ready to resume large-scale testing.
