US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping have not met in a year since their last meeting in Bali in November 2022, and relations between Beijing and Washington have been in the cold since then.

US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet on November 15 in San Francisco to seek to “stabilize” bilateral relations after recent tensions between the two powers, US officials said.

The meeting is not expected to yield major results, but is aimed at avoiding conflict between China and the US, according to senior US administration officials. The two leaders will also discuss pressing global crises such as the Israel-Hamas conflict and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, as well as tensions over Taiwan.

“President Biden will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in San Francisco on November 15,” the unnamed US official said. “Our goal is to try to take steps that will actually stabilize the relationship between the United States and China, clear up misunderstandings, and open new lines of communication. We are in competition with China, but we are not seeking confrontation or a new Cold War. We are competing responsibly.”

On the website of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, on November 10, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying announced that at the invitation of US President Joe Biden, Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit San Francisco (USA) from November 14-17.

The announcement stated that in the US, President Xi Jinping will meet with host country President Joe Biden and attend the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting.

Previously, on November 9, Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng said that the most important thing is to find a right way for China and the US to get along with each other.

“China-US relations still face serious challenges and there is still a long way to go to stabilize and improve relations,” Mr. Xie Feng said.

The most important thing is to find a right way for China and the US to get along in a new era.”

Mr. Ta Phong made the above statements in a video speech at the China-US Forum in Hong Kong, China, which took place on November 9.

On the same day, November 9, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen held discussions with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng ahead of the 2023 APEC Forum. The two-day bilateral discussion in San Francisco aims to lay the groundwork for the expected meeting between US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In her speech, Ms. Yellen once again affirmed that the US does not want to break economic relations with China. She emphasized that the agenda of both sides is concerns about a level playing field for businesses, cooperation on climate change and public debt, along with "the use of economic tools for national security purposes".
