On November 17, the US Department of Education announced an investigation into six universities and one school district related to allegations of anti-Semitism or anti-Muslim sentiment.
“Hateful behavior has no place in our schools,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “When students are targeted because they are Jewish, Muslim, Arab, Sikh, or any other ethnic group, schools must take action to ensure a safe and inclusive educational environment where everyone has the freedom to learn.”
The universities on the investigation list include Cornell University, Columbia University and the Cooper Union Institute for Advanced Arts and Sciences in New York state, Lafayette College, the University of Pennsylvania in Pennsylvania, Wellesley College in Massachusetts and the Maize Unified School District in Kansas.

The investigations were conducted under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin. Schools from elementary to college are responsible for providing all students with an environment free of discrimination.
Last month, prosecutors also charged a Cornell University student with social media threats against Jewish students. In the first two weeks since the Hamas-Israel conflict erupted on October 7, the nongovernmental organization Anti-Defamation League recorded a nearly 400 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents compared to the same period last year. Of the 312 anti-Semitic incidents the group recorded, 190 were related to the Hamas-Israel conflict.
Anti-Semitic incidents at schools have also occurred in Canada. On November 12, a Jewish school in Montreal was hit by gunfire in the early morning (local time), marking the third time in less than a week that Jewish schools in the city have been attacked amid rising tensions over the Hamas-Israel conflict.
