Yonhap reported that tens of thousands of people from both sides of support and opposition took to the streets in the capital Seoul today, March 9, after impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was released.

The Sarang Jeil Church, led by Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon, held an outdoor Sunday service near the presidential palace in central Seoul to show support for Yoon Suk Yeol. As of noon on March 9 (Korean time), about 4,500 people had gathered, according to Yonhap, citing an unofficial police estimate.

"With President Yoon's release, the impeachment trial has become meaningless. It's over. In case the Constitutional Court does something strange, we will exercise the people's right to protest," Jeon said.

Supporters of impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol gather near the presidential residence in Seoul on March 8 after Yoon's motorcade arrived at the residence.

Yoon was released from a detention center in Seoul on March 8 after a court ruled that his detention was invalid. Prior to his release, Yoon had been detained for 52 days on charges of inciting rebellion by declaring martial law on December 3, 2024.

Even if he is not detained, Mr. Yoon faces trial on charges of leading a rebellion and is awaiting a ruling by the Constitutional Court on whether to uphold or reject his impeachment over the declaration of martial law.

In addition, the Angry Blue group has scheduled a separate protest to protest Yoon's impeachment.

The ruling People's Power Party has stepped up calls for the Constitutional Court to overturn Yoon's impeachment and reinstate him. "The Constitutional Court must remember that it will face an unbearable backlash in case it hastily removes the president and he is later acquitted of the rebellion charge," a People's Power Party spokesman said, Yonhap reported.

Meanwhile, a group of activists protesting against Mr. Yoon was held overnight on March 8 and early on March 9 outside Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul, and the group held a press conference outside the nearby government complex today to announce a week of “urgent action” to urge Mr. Yoon’s removal.

At 2 p.m. on March 9 (12 p.m. the same day, Vietnam time), the group began marching from the National Palace Museum, with the participation of 100,000 people, leading to the partial closure of roads in the area. At 7 p.m. the same day, the group will hold another march in the Gwanghwamun area.

The opposition Democratic Party has demanded the immediate resignation of Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung to take responsibility for prosecutors' release of Mr Yoon after the court's ruling, threatening to consider all possible measures if Mr Shim refuses.
