The US Department of Defense announced on November 1 that it would deploy B-52 bombers, fighter jets, refueling aircraft and destroyers to the Middle East, as the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln is about to leave the region.

The Pentagon said in a statement that the deployment would take place over the coming months and demonstrate flexibility in US military operations around the world, according to Reuters.

"If Iran, its partners, or proxies take advantage of this moment to target US personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take all necessary measures to protect our people," said Pentagon spokesman Patrick Ryder.

The US has sent two aircraft carriers to the Middle East in the past year, as tensions have increased since the start of the Hamas-Israel conflict in October 2023.

The withdrawal of the USS Abraham Lincoln will create a carrier gap until another ship is deployed to the Middle East.

US warns of 'civilian lives' as Israel launches airstrikes on Lebanon

The latest adjustment of US forces in the region comes after Israel and Iran exchanged fire in October. Israel is also fighting Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as conducting airstrikes in Yemen after coming under attack from Iran-backed Houthi forces.

The US has pledged to help defend Israel and US forces in the Middle East, which have come under attack by Iran-backed groups in Syria, Iraq, Jordan and off the coast of Yemen.

The additional resources build on previous US defense deployments to the Middle East to support Israel, including the THAAD missile defense system deployed late last month, operated by US troops on the ground.
