Bamboo is a forestry tree, suitable for soil and climate conditions of mountainous districts, especially in mountainous border districts. Realizing the economic efficiency of bamboo trees, in recent years, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has coordinated with localities to mobilize people to expand the area and invest in restoring bamboo forests. Currently, bamboo trees are the "hunger eradication and poverty reduction" tree in the mountainous areas of Thanh Hoa.
The bitter bamboo model in Yen Thang commune (Lang Chanh) brings high income to the people.
Together with the staff of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quan Son district, we visited the bamboo growing model of Mr. Vi Van Phien's family in Hau village (Tam Lu commune). He told us: Previously, the family's forest area was planted with bamboo and other forestry trees, so the economic efficiency was low. Realizing the economic efficiency of bamboo, his family decided to destroy some ineffective forestry areas to plant bamboo. The family received support from the State with fertilizers as well as the transfer of new scientific and technical advances in bamboo care according to Resolution No. 185/2021/NQ-HDND dated December 10, 2021 of the Provincial People's Council on promulgating policies on agricultural, rural and farmer development in Thanh Hoa province for the period 2022-2025.
Up to now, his family has planted over 3 hectares of bamboo. Due to the suitability of the soil and climate and proper care, his family's bamboo area has developed well. Currently, the entire bamboo area of the family has been granted the international FSC certificate. Bamboo trees are sold to businesses that make bamboo and rattan, paper pulp, handicrafts, toothpicks, chopsticks, etc. Thanks to planting bamboo trees, his family has escaped poverty and become a fairly rich household in the commune.
Head of the Forest Use and Development Department, Provincial Forest Protection Department Nguyen Dinh Thai said: Currently, the province has 9,500 hectares of intensively cultivated bamboo, distributed in Lang Chanh, Quan Hoa, Quan Son, Ba Thuoc, Muong Lat districts, in which the bamboo area is mainly concentrated in Quan Son district, with 7,800 hectares.
In order to preserve, enhance the value and sustainable development of bamboo, in recent years, the Provincial People's Committee has issued policies to support intensive cultivation of bamboo forests, support the construction of forestry roads in concentrated production forest planting areas and support the issuance of sustainable forest management certificates according to Resolution No. 185/2021/NQ-HDND dated December 10, 2021 of the Provincial People's Council. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Thanh Hoa has coordinated with local authorities to mobilize people to participate in growing bamboo to obtain FSC certificates; reorganize production towards establishing cooperatives, household groups, and forest owners to manage, protect forests, and issue forest certificates associated with processing facilities. To date, the whole province has 4,292 hectares of bamboo certified by FSC (mainly in Quan Son), accounting for 45% of the bamboo area of the whole province; at the same time, 2 linkage chains have been formed between processing facilities and bamboo growers. According to estimates, when it comes to harvest, 1 hectare of bamboo can bring in an income of 60 to 75 million VND.
To continue developing and enhancing the value of bamboo forests, in the coming time, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development will continue to coordinate with districts to promote propaganda, mobilization, and guidance for people to apply scientific and technical advances and intensive cultivation of bamboo; continue to review degraded bamboo areas to plant high-quality bamboo varieties instead; have solutions to call for and attract investors with economic, scientific and technological potential to invest in building deep processing factories; guide cooperatives and households to build bamboo raw material areas associated with granting FSC certification along the chain.
