Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) announced on June 6 the official vote count results after completing the counting of all ballots cast on general election day on June 2, stating that former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum won overwhelmingly over the two remaining candidates.

On June 2, 2024, Mexico's National Electoral Institute (INE) announced preliminary vote counting results showing that former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum (pictured) won a resounding victory in the general election held on the same day with 57.2% of the votes, thereby becoming the first female President in history not only in Mexico but also in the North American region. According to the official vote counting results of INE, with 59.7% of the votes, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum, candidate of the Sigamos Haciendo Historia (We Continue to Make History) electoral coalition, continued to leave her two remaining opponents far behind, Ms. Xóchitl Gálvez - representing the Fuerza y Corazón por México (Strength and Heart for Mexico) electoral coalition and Mr. Jorge Álvarez Máynez - representing the Movimiento Ciudadano (People's Movement) electoral coalition with 27.4% and 10.4% of the votes, respectively.

The official vote count showed that Ms. Sheinbaum's support rate was even higher than the preliminary vote count announced on June 2, when the female politician's support rate was at 57.2% of the votes.

In addition, with a gap of 32.3 percentage points over her closest rival, candidate Xóchitl Gálvez, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum also became the elected president who received the most votes in Mexican history, and also the first female president in history not only in Mexico but also in North America.

However, according to Mexican electoral law, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum will be officially recognized as the winner of the June 2 election after receiving approval from the Mexican Federal Judicial Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF). As planned, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum will take office on October 1.

Ms. Sheinbaum, born in 1962, is a close ally of President Lopez Obrador. An environmental scientist by training, Ms. Sheinbaum worked at the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Before running for office, Ms. Sheinbaum served as mayor of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023.

The 2024 general election is the largest electoral event in Mexico's history, attracting nearly 100 million voters at home and abroad to cast their ballots at more than 170,000 ballot boxes across all 32 states of the country. In this general election, Mexican voters will vote for the President, 500 members of the House of Representatives, 128 members of the Senate, and nearly 20,000 local leadership positions.

This is also the general election that attracted a record number of international observers, with more than 1,300 people from 63 countries and territories around the world, in which the delegations with the largest number of observers include the Standing Committee of Political Parties of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPPAL) with 120 people, followed by the delegation of the Organization of American States (OAS) with 100 observers.

This is also the first time in history that Mexico has allowed detainees and migrants to vote in a general election, with a total turnout of tens of thousands.
