Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on November 26 that Donald Trump's intention to impose tariffs on Mexico after taking office would have serious consequences for the two economies.
A day after US President-elect Donald Trump announced he would impose a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, Ms. Sheinbaum announced that there would be countermeasures, emphasizing that the tariff confrontation would cause inflation and unemployment in both the US and Mexico.
“A tariff order will be issued in response to a previous order and so on until we put businesses in danger,” Ms. Sheinbaum said in a letter to Mr. Trump, Reuters reported.

“What’s the point of raising tariffs?” the Mexican president added, noting that Mr Trump’s intention would hit major US auto manufacturers in Mexico, such as General Motors and Ford. Mexico’s auto industry accounts for more than 35% of its exports of manufactured goods, with the US being the top destination for Mexican-made vehicles.
In a statement on November 25, Mr. Trump said he would impose tariffs on Mexico and Canada until the two countries tightened controls to stop drug trafficking and immigration into the United States. Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum said her administration had shown Mexico’s willingness to help combat fentanyl abuse in the United States, adding that concerns about the decline in border crossings and the cessation of migrant caravans at the US-Mexico border.
Mr. Trump has not commented on the latest statements from the Mexican president. Ms. Sheinbaum is confident that Mexico can reach a consensus during Mr. Trump’s second term, but asserts that if Washington persists in imposing tariffs, Mexico will strengthen trade relations with other partners.
According to Reuters, as of September, Mexico was the largest trading partner of the United States, accounting for 15.8% of total trade, followed by Canada with 13.9%. The United States is also Mexico's leading trading partner.
