Boeing passenger plane suddenly crashed right above a house

According to data from Flightradar24, the plane dropped about 500 feet above the ground as it flew over Oklahoma en route to Will Rogers Airport. The Boeing 737-800 took off from Las Vegas and was about 9 miles from Will Rogers Airport at the time.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said air traffic controllers notified Southwest pilots of the altitude warning at about 12:05 a.m. Wednesday.

“Southwest 4069, low altitude warning. You guys okay out there?” the air traffic controller asked, according to an audio archive of the broadcast provided by LiveATC.net.

“Yeah, we’re circling, 4069,” one of the pilots replied. The air traffic controller then asked the pilot to maintain an altitude of 900m.

Altitude warnings are issued when the aircraft is at an altitude that, in the operator's judgment, places the aircraft in unsafe proximity to terrain, obstacles, or other aircraft.

The aircraft was reportedly cleared to land on a visual approach from the northwest but was still 15 km from the airport.

The plane quickly regained altitude and circled to land safely at another runway just after midnight.

An investigation has now been launched into the incident, which has sparked much discussion on social media.

One person wrote on Facebook: "Last night I thought I was dreaming about a plane but it was actually a 737 flying over my house." Another person said in a local Facebook group: "The plane woke me up and I thought it was coming towards my house."

Southwest Airlines said Thursday it was in contact with the FAA. "Southwest is following its safety management system and is in contact with the FAA to investigate and resolve any anomalies in the aircraft's approach to the airport. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees," a spokesperson for the airline said.

The FAA also confirmed to USA Today earlier this week that it is investigating how a Southwest plane crashed just 400 feet above the Pacific Ocean en route to Hawaii in April.

The plane plunged "at an unusually high rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute" before the pilots were able to "pull" the plane up.
