L'Oréal recalls acne cream in the US due to suspected carcinogen contamination, Vietnam Drug Administration provides clear information about Effaclar Duo acne treatment products.
Recently, the famous cosmetics company L'Oréal has recalled some batches of Effaclar Duo acne treatment products in the US market, after concerns that these products may contain benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer.
This is a notable decision in the context of increasing concerns about consumer health and safety. The recall came after independent laboratory Vailsure in Connecticut (USA) discovered high concentrations of benzene in many products containing benzoyl peroxide, a key ingredient in acne products on the market. Benzene is a volatile liquid that is carcinogenic and is responsible for several serious illnesses such as leukemia and bone marrow disorders.
The detection of benzene in cosmetic products, especially skin care products, has caused great concern among consumers worldwide, especially those with sensitive skin or who have been using acne products for a long time.
Vailsure Laboratories has found that the concentration of benzene in some products containing benzoyl peroxide - an ingredient known for treating acne - exceeds the safety limit, and recommends that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) immediately recall these products to protect public health. This prompted L'Oréal to make the decision to recall these product lots in the US market to ensure consumer safety.
Regarding this event, the Drug Administration of Vietnam, Ministry of Health has updated information on the status of products in the La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo line announced and circulated in Vietnam.
Specifically, the Drug Administration of Vietnam said that from January 1, 2020 to March 14, 2025, four Effaclar Duo products were announced and granted registration numbers in Vietnam by L'Oréal Vietnam.
These products include: Effaclar Duo (+) (Registration number 170503/22/CBMP-QLD); Effaclar Duo+M (Registration number 201096/23/CBMP-QLD); Effaclar Duo+M (Registration number 212810/23/CBMP-QLD); Effaclar Duo(+) Unifiant Unifying Corrective Unclogging Care (Registration number 252174/24/CBMP-QLD).
According to information from the Drug Administration, these products do not contain benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient that is easily related to the presence of benzene in the product.
The purpose of these products is to nourish the skin, reduce acne and unclog pores, in full compliance with Vietnamese law.
The Drug Administration also clarified that benzoyl peroxide is an ingredient that is only allowed to be used in artificial nail systems by professional experts in Vietnam, and is not allowed to be used in regular cosmetic products, unless specially licensed.
This is stipulated in Circular No. 06/2011/2011 of the Ministry of Health and the provisions of the ASEAN Cosmetics Agreement, of which Vietnam is a signatory.
Information from the Drug Administration of Vietnam also said that there are currently only two Effaclar Duo+M products (registration number 201096/23/CBMP-QLD and 212810/23/CBMP-QLD) circulating on the Vietnamese market. These products have a different formula and do not contain benzoyl peroxide.
L'Oréal has responded to the product recall in the US and pledged that all products sold in the Vietnamese market strictly comply with legal regulations on consumer safety and health.
The current Effaclar Duo product line in Vietnam has a completely different formula and does not contain benzoyl peroxide, and is manufactured according to international quality standards, ensuring absolute safety for users.
Vietnam is currently one of the fastest growing cosmetic markets in Southeast Asia. Vietnamese consumers are increasingly interested in choosing safe and quality health and beauty care products.
The Drug Administration's proactive information and strict management of cosmetic products helps protect consumers from unnecessary risks, while enhancing the reputation of the Vietnamese cosmetics industry.
With the strong development of the cosmetics industry, maintaining and improving safety standards for consumers is an important factor.
Authorities such as the Drug Administration of Vietnam play an important role in monitoring and protecting consumers from potential health risks from substandard products.
