Vietnamese football is changing
Previously, national team coaches often took on the responsibility of the Vietnam U.23 team. This method is said to save costs. Instead of having to hire 2 coaches with 2 different working teams, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) only needs to hire 1 coach with 1 team, to do the work of the 2 most important teams in football.
However, as time went on, the number of tournaments for both teams increased, stemming from the fact that Vietnamese teams were increasingly interested in continental tournaments and above, and at the same time we almost always had a place in the finals of Asian tournaments, at both the national team and U.23 team levels.
Coach Kim Sang-sik may become head coach of Vietnam national team
That is why the number of times the two national teams and U.23 Vietnam gather at the same time to prepare for international missions has appeared quite a lot recently.
At times like these, coaches in the national team can easily lose focus. For example, coach Philippe Troussier (French) in the recent period could not "split himself" to be present in both teams at the same time, and in the end, Mr. Troussier had to temporarily hand over the U.23 Vietnam team to his assistant, if at the same time the Vietnam national team focused on international duties.
To avoid overlapping work between national team coaches and overloading of national team coaches, if they have to take charge of two teams at the same time, former Vice President (VP) in charge of professional affairs of VFF Duong Vu Lam suggested: "In my opinion, it's time for us to separate the two teams, foreign coaches take charge of the national team and domestic coaches take charge of the U.23 team."
Currently, the quality of domestic coaches has improved significantly. I think that coaches like Hoang Anh Tuan, Tran Minh Chien... are capable of leading the Vietnam U.23 team. If the above domestic coaches are assigned to lead the U.23 team, we can specialize the teams, avoiding the situation where a coach has to run back and forth to 2 different teams."
Not only that, Mr. Duong Vu Lam continued to analyze: "Second, the cost of hiring domestic coaches and Vietnamese assistant coaches is not too large, so if there is an additional completely independent team in the U.23 team compared to the national team, it is not a financial burden for VFF.
Third, when there is a domestic coach in charge of the U.23 Vietnam team, we will almost certainly have a backup for the national team coach position, in case the foreign coach in the national team is not suitable or does not meet the performance and professional requirements set by the VFF."
Who is Mr. Kim Sang-sik, the person expected to lead the Vietnamese team?
Experience from neighboring football backgrounds
Looking at neighboring football backgrounds, football backgrounds with a higher level than Vietnamese football, the trend of using 2 separate coaches for the national team and the U.23 team is also being applied by them.
Moreover, the formula of foreign coaches for the national team and domestic coaches for the U.23 team is a popular formula. For example, the Thai national team has a foreign coach, Mr. Masatada Ishii from Japan, while the Thai U.23 team has a domestic coach, Mr. Issara Sritaro (until Mr. Sritaro resigned after the Thai U.23 team returned home from the 2024 U.23 Asian Cup).
The Korean national team previously had a foreign coach, Mr. Klinsmann (German), and the Korean U.23 team had a domestic coach, Mr. Hwang Sun-hong. After coach Klinsmann was dismissed due to failure at the 2023 Asian Cup, Korean football immediately had coach Hwang Sun-hong promoted from the U.23 team, temporarily leading the national team in the World Cup qualifiers in March, helping Korean football not to "fall behind" due to the sudden loss of players.
Coach Hoang Anh Tuan may be assigned to take charge of the Vietnam U.23 team.
Only Indonesia currently maintains one coach for both the national team and U.23 team, Mr. Shin Tae-yong (Korean).
However, right behind coach Shin Tae-yong, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) has also prepared domestic coach Indra Sjafri for the Indonesian U.20 team, as a backup plan, in case coach Shin Tae-yong fails and Indonesian football needs a temporary replacement. Coach Indra Sjafri is also the one who helped the Indonesian U.23 team win the 32nd SEA Games last year, before he handed over the U.23 team to coach Shin Tae-yong.
These are all experiences that Vietnamese football can refer to. As mentioned, Vietnamese football has changed quite a lot compared to a few years ago, the work in the national teams and U.23 Vietnam is now much more than before!
