Forest products still have a trade surplus of nearly 11 billion USD despite difficulties

On the occasion of Vietnam Forestry Day November 28 and the 78th anniversary of the establishment of the forestry sector (December 1, 1945 - December 1, 2023), Mr. Nguyen Quoc Tri, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, shared some achievements and orientations of the forestry sector in the coming time.

Vietnam has become the 5th country in the world, 2nd in Asia, 1st in Southeast Asia in exporting forestry products.

According to Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri, one of the most impressive figures of the forestry sector in recent years is the export of forest products. Specifically, the export of wood and non-wood forest products is an industry with a very fast growth rate and a high trade surplus.

Vietnam has become the 5th country in the world, 2nd in Asia, 1st in Southeast Asia in exporting forest products. Vietnamese wooden products are present in more than 140 countries and territories.

In terms of specific figures, if in 2021, the export value of wood and forestry products reached 15.96 billion USD, the trade surplus reached 13.03 billion USD, then in 2022 it reached 17.09 billion USD and 14.07 billion USD respectively.

Despite many difficulties in 2023, in the past 11 months, the export value of wood and forestry products still reached about 12.97 billion USD, with a trade surplus of 10.98 billion USD.

The growth rate of added value in the forestry sector in the past 3 years has averaged over 5.0%/year (3.88% in 2021; 6.13% in 2022; 3.13% in the first 9 months of 2023; estimated to reach about 5.0% in the whole year of 2023).

"Notably, domestic raw materials currently meet over 70% of the demand for the wood processing industry and forestry product exports," Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri emphasized.

Vietnam is one of the 10 countries with the highest increase in forest area.

A report from the Forestry Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) shows that the current forest area of ​​the country is 14.79 million hectares, with the forest cover rate currently reaching 42.02%.

According to the report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the assessment of global forest resources, while the world's forest area is decreasing sharply and the planted forest area is low, Vietnam is one of the 10 countries in the world with the highest increase in forest area and the largest planted forest area in the world.

The leader of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development added that the forestry sector is implementing a number of programs and projects with the common goal of promoting the protective function of forests, responding to climate change, mitigating natural disasters, conserving biodiversity, contributing to socio-economic development and strengthening national defense and security.

Along with that, the industry also proactively participates in and implements international commitments on responding to climate change such as: National program on reducing greenhouse gas emissions through limiting deforestation and forest degradation; conserving, enhancing carbon stocks and sustainably managing forest resources by 2030.

Regarding solutions in the coming time, Deputy Minister Nguyen Quoc Tri said that the forestry sector will focus on effectively implementing the tasks and solutions of the Vietnam Forestry Development Strategy for the period 2021 - 2030, with a vision to 2050; the Sustainable Forestry Development Program for the period 2021 - 2025 and key programs and projects to build the forestry sector into a specific economic and technical sector.

Establish, manage, protect, develop and sustainably use land and forests planned for forestry; ensure broad and equal participation of economic sectors and social organizations in forestry activities, and maximize the mobilization of social resources.

In addition, Mr. Tri also mentioned the aspect of applying advanced and modern science and technology; maximizing the potential, role and effects of forests, sustainably developing the forestry sector, making increasing contributions to the process of socio-economic development, protecting the ecological environment, water security, mitigating natural disasters, proactively and effectively responding to climate change, conserving natural resources and biodiversity.

Providing a variety of forest ecosystem services, contributing to hunger eradication and poverty reduction, improving livelihoods for rural people in mountainous areas and ethnic minorities; maintaining national defense and security and successfully implementing national goals on sustainable development...
