Improve the quality and efficiency of large timber plantation

Recognizing that forests are a valuable resource, contributing significantly to local socio-economic development, national defense and security protection, and having great value in terms of ecology and environment, the Party Committee, the government, relevant sectors, forest owners and people of Lang Chanh district have implemented many synchronous solutions to protect forests in association with forestry economic development. The focus is on propagating and mobilizing people to exploit potentials and advantages, investing capital in developing large timber forests, providing raw wood and other forest products for processing and construction; creating more jobs for people and increasing income for households working in forestry.

In recent years, the board has proactively planted production forests in the direction of intensive cultivation of large timber forests, using basal fertilizers and top dressing for plants during the care period, so more than 1,800 hectares of newly planted forests from previous years, with the main tree species being acacia, bamboo, and fat... have grown and developed well and have been exploited, with quite high economic efficiency. In the period from 2017-2022, the board has newly planted 824 hectares of large timber forests, which are currently growing and developing well. In 2023, Lang Chanh Forest Protection Management Board planted 171.6 hectares of large timber forest using hybrid acacia and Australian acacia on the production forest area that has just been exploited according to regulations (exceeding 71.6 hectares compared to the plan for new forest planting in 2023). In the first 9 months of 2024, Lang Chanh Forest Protection Management Board planted 110 hectares of large timber forest, exceeding the plan by 10 hectares. Effective forest development at Lang Chanh Forest Protection Management Board has increased income for forest owners, contributing to sustainable forest protection and development.

To achieve the goal of stably developing a large timber business area of ​​about 56,000 hectares by 2025, meeting the demand for large timber for deep processing and export, the Provincial People's Committee has assigned tasks to relevant departments, branches and People's Committees of districts to synchronously implement solutions from planning to organizing planting, care, exploitation and processing of forest products; propagating and mobilizing people to mobilize all social resources for the development of large timber forest business. To support organizations and individuals planting production forests using tissue cultured trees, on December 10, 2021, the Provincial People's Council issued Resolution No. 185/2021/NQ-HDND on promulgating policies for agricultural, rural and farmer development in Thanh Hoa province, period 2022-2025. Accordingly, the support level is 1,300 VND/seedling, not exceeding 2 million VND/ha. Support conditions: organizations, families, and individuals are allocated land by the State, leased land, or contracted production forest land to plant production forests. The area of ​​production forest planting using tissue cultured seedlings must be from 1ha or more for households and individuals and from 20ha or more for organizations.

To expand the area and improve the efficiency of large timber plantation, Thanh Hoa province has implemented dozens of models of intensive large timber plantation in districts such as Lang Chanh, Nhu Thanh, Nhu Xuan, Thuong Xuan, etc. to guide people to replicate on a large scale. Through monitoring and evaluation by specialized agencies on the same forest area, the conversion of small timber forests into large timber business forests takes about 5-7 years longer than small timber, but the economic value is 2.5 to 3 times higher than continuously implementing 2 small timber business cycles.

As a result, by October 2024, the whole province had developed 56,000 hectares of large-scale timber plantations. The main tree species grown are Australian acacia, tung, xoan ta, green lim, lat hoa, etc., which are well cared for, protected, and developed. Many households in mountainous areas have invested in building large-scale timber plantation models and combining short-term crops, bringing quite high economic efficiency. In recent years, the area of ​​large-scale timber plantations that are ready for exploitation according to regulations will be supplemented by forest owners with new large-scale timber plantations, focusing on the use of tissue-cultured trees, contributing to improving the quality and efficiency of the plantations.
