Vietnam's digital economy grows fastest in Southeast Asia

On the afternoon of February 6, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, Chairman of the National Committee on Digital Transformation, chaired the 10th meeting to review the activities of the Committee and Project 06 in 2024, and key directions and tasks in 2025. The meeting was broadcast live to the connecting points of ministries, branches, and local People's Committees nationwide.

At Dak Nong bridge, comrade Ton Thi Ngoc Ngoc Hanh, Member of Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of Provincial People's Committee, leaders of departments, branches, People's Committees of districts and cities attended.

According to the Ministry of Information and Communications, Vietnam rose to 71st place out of 193 countries in the United Nations e-Government rankings (announced in September 2024), up 15 places compared to 2022. This is the first time Vietnam has been ranked in the group of countries with an e-Government Development Index (EGDI) at the "Very High" level.

Vietnam has put into operation a new submarine cable, the 6th and the largest capacity in Vietnam (20Tbps), helping to improve internet speed and ensure the sustainability of Vietnam's international connections. The rate of households with fiber optic internet reached 82.4%, exceeding the target of 80% by 2025. Digital data and digital platforms continue to be built and developed.

Vietnam also established 4 more national databases, bringing the total to 10 national databases. 5 national databases have been completed and put into use; 3 databases are being deployed; 2 databases have plans and have started to be deployed. Ministries, branches and localities established 678 more databases, an increase of 30%, bringing the total number of databases to 2,990. Data transactions via the national data sharing integration platform increased by 57%, from 647 million in 2023 to 1,013 million transactions in 2024.

The rate of online records nationwide reached 45%, an increase of 2.5 times compared to 2023; The National Public Service Portal continues to be effective with 4,475 integrated procedures (70.8% of total administrative procedures). From July 2024, VNeID will be used to log in and use online public services (about 425,000 times/day), creating convenience for people and businesses. The proportion of the digital economy in 2024 is estimated to reach 18.3% of GDP, with a growth rate exceeding 20%/year, 3 times higher than the GDP growth rate, the fastest in Southeast Asia...

According to the Working Group implementing Project 06/CP, Project 06 continues to be strongly implemented, bringing many benefits that are highly appreciated and supported by the people. Accordingly, ministries and branches have provided 54/76 essential public services according to Decision No. 206/QD-TTg dated February 28, 2024, of which 43 administrative procedures have been provided in full on the national public service portal. The inter-connected public service software has been deployed nationwide with 520,887 birth registration records and 132,541 death registration records.

Nationwide, 15,822,260 citizen information has been integrated into the electronic health book.

The Ministry of Public Security has completed providing 35 utilities on VNeID that have been well received by the people, typically: Nationwide, 15,822,260 citizen information has been integrated into the electronic health book, 911,696 referral paper records and 2,629,117 re-examination appointment paper records. 63/63 localities have officially deployed the issuance of Judicial Schedules on VNeID with 129,695 records generated on the VNeID application.

Speaking at the meeting, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that recently, the Politburo issued Resolution 57-NQ/TW on promoting science and technology, innovation and digital transformation; the Government issued an Action Program to implement Resolution 57-NQ/TW with the spirit of 5 clear points: "clear people, clear work, clear responsibilities, clear schedule, clear products". The Action Program is also the key direction and task to promote the implementation of digital transformation and Project 06 in the coming time.

According to the Prime Minister, we have done many things but many things have not been done, especially slow progress. If the pace is slow, it will be very difficult to complete the set goals, especially ministries and branches establishing databases to connect to the national database.

The Prime Minister affirmed that databases are means of production, and intelligence contributes to promoting the creative economy; therefore, we must act quickly, otherwise we will fall behind. The Prime Minister suggested clearly defining key tasks and solutions to accelerate, break through, and reach the finish line in the coming time.
