Phu Tho Department of Transport has just issued Notice No. 3997/TB-SGTVT dated December 16 regarding the continued use of valid driving licenses after January 1, 2025. Accordingly, based on the transitional provisions in Article 89 of the Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety dated June 27, 2024, driving licenses issued before the effective date of this Law shall continue to be used according to the term stated on the driving license.
Driving licenses issued before the effective date of this Law (January 1, 2025) shall continue to be used according to the term stated on the driving license.
Specifically, the 2008 Road Traffic Law (Law No. 23/2008/QH12 dated November 13, 2008) stipulates 13 driving license classes, including: A1, A2, A3, A4, B1, B2, C, D, E, FB2, FD, FC, FE.
The 2024 Road Traffic Safety Law, effective from January 1, 2025, will change the classification of driving licenses. The law stipulates 15 driving license categories, including: A1, A, B1, B, C1, C, D1, D2, D, BE, C1E, CE, D1E, D2E, DE (The law takes effect from January 1, 2025 and replaces the 2008 Road Traffic Law).
Article 89 of the 2024 Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety stipulates the transitional provisions on driving licenses as follows: Driving licenses issued before the effective date of this Law (January 1, 2025) shall continue to be used according to the validity period stated on the driving license. Driving licenses issued before the effective date of this Law, if not yet exchanged or reissued, shall be implemented according to the specific provisions in Clause 2, Article 89.
To ensure the issuance and renewal of driving licenses within the prescribed time, the Department of Transport recommends that people do not issue and renew driving licenses when not really necessary.
