On August 24, information from Ben Cau District Police, Tay Ninh Province, issued a decision to prosecute the case and prosecute Mai Dong Tinh (28 years old, residing in Thanh Binh C Quarter, Go Dau Town, Go Dau District) for violating regulations on the protection of endangered and rare animals.
According to records, at around 8:00 p.m. on August 15, while on an anti-smuggling patrol in the area near the TMTC Industrial Park (Thuan Dong Hamlet, Loi Thuan Commune), Ben Cau District Police discovered Mai Dong Tinh driving a motorbike with license plate 70F1-307.62 carrying a suspicious styrofoam box, so they asked him to stop the vehicle for inspection.
Upon inspection, the police discovered that the styrofoam box contained 7 monitor lizards, all of which were still alive. Ben Cau District Police made a record to confiscate the evidence and took Tinh to the headquarters for questioning.
At the police station, the subject stated that he was hired by an acquaintance to go to the border area of Thuan Tay hamlet, Loi Thuan commune to receive the styrofoam box containing the above-mentioned monitor lizards, and deliver it to the area near the TMTC Industrial Park for a fee of 200,000 VND. He was arrested while carrying out the mission.
The monitor lizard has the scientific name Varanus nebulosus, and is listed as a rare and endangered species of forest plants and animals. Therefore, this species is protected by law and is strictly prohibited from exploitation, sale, and consumption in any form.
