On the afternoon of October 29, PetroVietnam Gas Corporation (PV Gas) held an inauguration ceremony for the 1 million ton/year LNG terminal at Thi Vai. This is the largest LNG terminal in Vietnam located in Cai Mep Industrial Park, Phu My town, Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.
The event marks PV Gas' efforts in the journey of converting to green, environmentally friendly energy.
Attending the inauguration ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang, representatives of central ministries and branches and leaders of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province.
The 1 million ton Thi Vai LNG warehouse, invested by PV GAS and a consortium of two general contractors, started construction on October 28, 2019 with a total investment of nearly 300 million USD.
After nearly 4 years, from a land area of about 5 hectares, the first, largest and most modern LNG project in Vietnam has emerged with a port that can receive LNG carriers with a capacity of up to 100,000 DWT; tanks with a storage capacity of 180,000 m3, reaching an average warehouse capacity of 1 million tons of LNG/year, phase 2 is expected to increase to 3 million tons of LNG/year.
Mr. Pham Van Phong, General Director of PV Gas, said that the completion and operation of the Thi Vai LNG Terminal project marks the first successful step in the task of developing LNG import infrastructure, gradually ensuring the sustainable development of the Vietnamese gas industry.
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang congratulated PV Gas and its staff on having another important project put into operation, paving the way for the first LNG product to be available in the Vietnamese market, marking an important step in the process of energy transition towards green, clean, and sustainable energy.
However, the Deputy Prime Minister also noted that Vietnam only has one LNG Thi Vai gas depot with a capacity of 1 million tons/year. Meanwhile, electricity is a new field in Vietnam, so there will be certain difficulties and obstacles in terms of policy mechanisms, and support from ministries and local sectors is needed during the implementation process.
To effectively implement the goals of LNG development according to the approved plan, the Deputy Prime Minister requested PV Gas and its member units to accelerate the investment in the construction of Nhon Trach 3 and 4 plants to soon put the Thi Vai LNG gas chain into synchronous operation; in addition, continue to study and invest in phase 2 to increase the capacity of Thi Vai LNG gas to 3 million tons/year.
