In his opening speech, Mr. Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee, said that this "Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange" event is of special significance, marking the 20th time Hoi An City and its Japanese partners have coordinated to organize it with the increasing participation of organizations and businesses from both Japan and Vietnam. In particular, this year's event also had the participation of Mr. Sugi Ryotaro - former Special Ambassador of Vietnam - Japan, who has made important contributions to initiating the annual Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange in Hoi An, since 2003.
According to Mr. Son, with each organization, the programs are increasingly invested in elaborately, imbued with traditional and modern identities, jointly implemented by artisans, artists, and singers from Vietnam and Japan.
Many activities have become unique marks and unique cultural tourism products such as: Chau An Thuyen exhibition space, Japanese Cultural Exhibition House at 6 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, reenactment of the wedding of Princess Ngoc Hoa and Japanese merchant Araki Sotaro, culinary exchange activities, traditional cultural performances of Japan and Hoi An, Quang Nam.
"This year's event will also be supplemented with many new and exciting programs and activities with many cultural colors. In particular, on this occasion, the city will organize the inauguration ceremony of the project to restore the Japanese Covered Bridge relic - a strong testament to cooperation in the field of cultural heritage conservation and a bridge connecting the friendship between Hoi An, Vietnam - Japan from the past to the present and the future", Mr. Nguyen Van Son emphasized.
The Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee shared that Vietnam and Japan are two nations with many similarities in history, culture and a long tradition of friendly exchange. Hoi An City - Quang Nam is known as one of the places where the relationship between Vietnam and Japan originated through bustling trade activities at Hoi An port in the 17th and 18th centuries as well as the beautiful historical relationship between Princess Ngoc Hoa and merchant Araki Sotaro - from Nagasaki province.

Continuing the journey of more than 400 years in history, the relationship between Japan and Hoi An today has always been inherited and nurtured by generations through cooperation activities in many fields established between Hoi An and Japanese organizations and localities. The event "Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange" is a unique cultural and artistic activity held annually, continuously from 2003 to present. After 19 times of organization, it has left many deep impressions, increasingly receiving the attention and support of many localities, organizations and individuals in Japan and Vietnam.
"The successful organization of the event over the years has contributed to enhancing mutual understanding, strengthening the close and affectionate relationship between the people of the two countries; conveying the message of strong friendship, overcoming all obstacles and difficulties and moving towards the future together," said Mr. Son.

Speaking at the event, Consul General of Japan in Da Nang Mori Takero expressed his deep gratitude to those who have contributed to promoting the relationship between Japan and Hoi An up to now, especially those who have made every effort to maintain the organization of this event in Hoi An city, Quang Nam province.
"I think the motivation for the event to be held 20 times in a row like this is the common desire of both Japan and Hoi An to respect and preserve history. As part of the series of events, on the morning of August 3, there will be an event called "Cultural Exchange between Hoi An and Japan - A Journey of Cultural Connection" and a premiere of the opera "Princess Anio". This is a love story about 400 years ago between ARAKI Sotaro, a merchant from Nagasaki, and Princess Ngoc Hoa - a princess of the Nguyen Dynasty", said Mr. Mori Takero.
The opening ceremony featured performances by traditional Japanese art troupes and famous singers such as Hien Thuc, Pham Dinh Thai Ngan, Kolme and Anirock bands from Japan, along with traditional performances from Hoi An.
The "20th Hoi An - Japan Cultural Exchange" event took place from August 2 - 4 in the Old Quarter and Hoi An Park, including many special activities such as: "Japanese Doll" exhibition and "Dialogue with Ukiyo-e" painting exhibition; "Reenactment of the wedding of Princess Ngoc Hoa and merchant Araki Sotaro"; boat racing "Hoi An - Japan and tourists"; football exchange between Hoi An children and the coaching staff of Kawasaki Frontale Club (2021 J-League champion); baseball, boxing and wrestling exchanges; pole pushing and sack jumping competitions...
In addition, there are a series of unique activities, demonstrating the beauty of traditional Japanese culture such as: Drawing children's paintings in Hoi An - Japan, Premiere of the opera "Princess Anio", Japanese calligraphy instruction, Japanese tea ceremony experience, Hizen ceramic painting experience, fair; Japanese culinary space, Japanese tourism promotion and accessory booths, check-in photos...
In particular, on this occasion, Hoi An City will hold the inauguration ceremony of the project to restore the Japanese Covered Bridge relic at 4:30 p.m. on August 3. The Japanese Covered Bridge is a symbolic relic of Hoi An City and a profound testament to the presence and cultural exchange of Japan in Hoi An. After many years of restoration and repair with the consultation of many experts in Vietnam and Japan, the Japanese Covered Bridge is once again present to the public.
