(Dan Tri) - After 4 years since the Covid-19 pandemic, Chinese tourists have returned to the leading position in international visitors to Vietnam for the first time, reaching more than 357,000 arrivals in May.
According to data released by the General Statistics Office, in the first 5 months of the year, Vietnam welcomed nearly 7.6 million international visitors, an increase of nearly 65% over the same period in 2023, an increase of nearly 4% over 2019. In May alone, the number of international visitors to our country reached nearly 1.4 million, down 10% compared to April but up 51% over the same period in 2023. According to experts and businesses, the decrease in the number of international visitors in May is considered "normal" because this is the time when European and Northeast Asian markets often do not travel far. Notably, in May, China surpassed South Korea to become the leading international visitor to Vietnam, with more than 357,000 visitors. South Korea ranked second with more than 351,000 visitors. After 4 years since the Covid-19 pandemic, this is the first month that China has returned to the number 1 position. It is predicted that this group of visitors will invade the Vietnamese tourism market in the near future.

The remaining markets in the top 10 include Taiwan (China), Japan, India, the US, Cambodia, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand. However, in the 5 months, South Korea is still the largest market sending visitors to Vietnam with over 1.9 million arrivals (accounting for 25.7%). China ranked second, reaching 1.6 million arrivals (accounting for 21.2%). In terms of growth drivers, Asian visitors increased by 73% with the main driving force from Northeast Asia: China (up 302.3%), Taiwan (up 110.1%), South Korea (up 48.1%), Japan (up 41.7%)... The National Tourism Administration commented that European markets continued to grow well (57.1%) thanks to the effectiveness of the open visa policy applied from August 15, 2023. Most markets are very positive, including major markets such as the UK (up 31.6%), France (up 39.5%), Germany (up 34.6%)... The World Economic Forum's (WEF) Global Tourism Development Capability Index 2024 report said that many Southeast Asian countries have dropped in rank, of which Vietnam dropped 3 places compared to 2021. However, many experts believe that the numbers in the report do not fully reflect the overall tourism picture in Vietnam. Many destinations in Vietnam are still highly appreciated by prestigious world magazines.
